    Benefits Of Massage Aromatherapy

Plants and their parts are used in ancient civilizations to heal, energize, and help the body relax. This ancient science of healing is still practiced today and is widely known as aromatherapy. As with herbal medicine, parts of plants such as barks, seeds, flowers, leaves and roots are used to extract essential oils that are used in aromatherapy massages.

    What is aromatherapy massage?

As the name implies, it is a massage that is aided with aromatherapy. Therapists use a concoction of essential oils to relieve tired and aching muscles. These essential oils are highly volatile and are absorbed in the skin to provide relief. Not only does it help alleviate body pains but it also puts the mind and body at a relaxed and calm state. A therapist would usually use around four types of essential oils in every massage session – a mixture of lavender and bergamot to help soothe your nerves and peppermint and eucalyptus to ease sore muscles. The oils extracted from different parts of plants are highly volatile compared to perfume oils and fragrances that are usually derived from chemicals. Other than massages, these oils are also used in aromatherapy baths, facials, and other body treatments.

The essential oils used in aromatherapy massages have different effects and healing properties. They can affect your heart rate, blood pressure, stress level, memory, breathing, digestion, and your immune system. Some of these oils can energize you while some will help you relax. Chamomile, geranium and lavender are known for their relaxing effects while the scent of the ylang ylang flower, rose, neroli and clary sage can uplift your mood. Rosemary is known for its energizing and calming effects while the eucalyptus, tea tree and pine is more popular as decongestant.

    Benefits of aromatherapy massage

Other than the benefits to the body, aromatherapy massage also promotes well being and a sense of peace and tranquility. It helps in relieving stress and also alleviates your mood. The slow, rhythmic and gentle strokes of the massage soothe the muscles and the joints, therefore relieving pain in the area. It is also beneficial for those who are suffering from mild headaches to migraines, back pains and insomnia. A massage will increase the amount of oxygen that is absorbed by the muscles and promote blood circulation. When there is enough blood that circulates in the brain, the limbic system is stimulated; releasing hormones that help that body feel rejuvenated. It also stimulates the brain to produce the feel good hormones called endorphins that relieve stress. All in all, an aromatherapy massage will reduce muscles spasms and provide relief for muscle tension and stiffness, will improve the flexibility in the joints and reduce levels of anxiety and blood pressure.

    What Should Be Considered

Aromatherapy is generally good for one's health and well being. However, there are instances when one should avoid getting a massage. If you just had your surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, you should not get any massage unless recommended by your physician. The same also applies to people who are prone to blood clots as getting a massage may dislodge the clots and cause more damage than good. Massages should also be avoided in areas where there are bruises, burns, tumors, unhealed wounds, fractures and abdominal hernia. While massages are recommended for pregnant women to ease sore feet and back, pregnant women should only get massages from therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage. This is especially important in the first trimester where the mother’s and the child’s health is delicate and pressing on certain pressure points may cause miscarriage.
