The 10 things you need to know about Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the ancient tradition of health from India, is recognised by the World Health Organisation. It considers you to be unique. So your health needs are unique. Yet general principles do exist for all, with emphasis on the importance of digestion.

    1. Enjoy your food. Hunger before a meal is essential for good digestion and for the joy. Eat sitting and savour your food. Stop when your stomach is three quarters full.

    2. Digestion works best at midday, our traditional time for the main meal. It is better to eat lightly and before 7pm in the evening. No grazing unless hungry! A disturbed digestion results in toxins which cause disease.

    3. Food can only be your best medicine if you have good digestion. Appropriately spicing food is an art that helps digestion.

    4. Choose fresh organic foods according to the season and your own Ayurvedic constitution.

    5. Fast according to your strength. Stronger people can tolerate a day or two of fasting. For others, a day eating lightly is adequate and more could harm them.

    6. Autumn is a time to hibernate. Just observe what nature does over the next few months -- it rests. So take life easy until Christmas.

    7. Exercise is important but must be done according to your nature and strength. Certainly strain or pain is unnatural and unnecessary. 50 per cent of maximum is the level to work out at.

    8. "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy ... " the saying is as true today as it has always been.

    9. The best way to nourish yourself is with the love of family and friends and a positive outlook on your life.

    10. Scientific research indicates that Transcendental Meditation (TM) reduces stress, promotes clarity of mind and good health and may even prolong your life.

Since you are unique, you need to understand your unique needs with respect to diet, lifestyle, exercise and recreation. This ensures you will get the best out of your life.
