Beauty prep for a job interview

Beauty prep for a job interview

The right kind of makeup and hairstyle for a job interview will make a positive statement of who you are. The following beauty tips on grooming will give you a leg up on your competitors.

When we have that all important job interview, as far as physical appearances are concerned, most of us tend to focus on our clothes - dressing up in an impeccable crisp office shirt, well-fitted skirt or trouser. Naturally, in between brushing our negotiation skills and choosing the right outfit, we undermine the importance of formal make-up, a smart hairdo or manicured nails! Believe it or not, makeup and general grooming not only makes you look presentable, but it also portrays you as more competent. Don't forget, job interviews are all about making a great first impression.

    Face
Your face reflects your personality. If you are well-groomed and looking good, it will definitely add oodles of confidence to your attitude. When it comes to applying makeup to your face, the key is to keep it understated. Says makeup expert Kapil Bhalla, "Your makeup should be simple and not dramatic. Always apply minimal foundation, so that in case you perspire, your makeup doesn't run and ruin your face. If you have to use a base, opt for a concealer, preferably under the eyes to cover up any dark circles."

For the eye-shadow, use neutral shades like tan, brown and cream. A little bit of shimmer is fine, but stay away from adding a lot of shine to your eyelids. Mascara and a thin line of smudged pencil eyeliner are really all you need. While blush provides a natural hint of colour on the cheeks, it is wise to use a very light shade for the interview. See that you don't overdo it or you might end up looking flushed and nervous! For your lips, Bhalla suggests, "It's not necessary to only wear light shades on your lips. If you want to wear a darker shade like a brown or maroon, just make sure that it has a matte finish and is not glossy. Well-defined lips can enhance your personality.

    Nails
Nails are one of the most ignored body parts, but they hold significance, when it comes to judging a person's personality. See to it that all your nails are clean, of the same size, well-buffed and immaculate. If you are applying nail paint, then make sure they aren't chipped. Bare or neutral nails are fool-proof. You can also use off-white or baby pink polish. It is advisable to not have excessively long nails.

    Hair
A job interview isn't the time to experiment with a funky hair style, dramatic haircuts or creative hair colours. For a formal occasion like this, it's best to stick to conservative hairdos. For corporate job interviews, opt for one that keeps your hair away from your face. If you want to leave your hair loose, just make sure it doesn't fall on your face, as flyaways can be very distracting. The best hairstyle that suits all hair types is a neat pony tail or a low bun. As far as hair colour is concerned, keep it subdued. Stick to black or shades of brown.

    Tip:
Your hands talk for you! So don't forget to moisturise your hands, especially the elbows.

    Stay away from...

    - Jarring red lipstick
    - Shimmering gloss of any colour for your lips
    - Tons of caked-on foundation on the face
    - The classic smokey eye makeup
    - Bright shades for eye shadow
