Go chic with oh-so-cool linen this season

Breezy and lightweight - linens are the perfect respite from the scorching summer heat. This season, go beyond the conventional style of sporting this oh-so-cool fabric

The city's burning up - after all, summer has made a grand entry. Naturally, all you want to do is sport cool, feather-soft clothes - fashion and panache be damned! That's the attitude, even the most fashion-conscious amongst us nurture, when the scorching summers come. But what if you could club high-street style as well as comfort in this weather? Sounds incredulous? Don't you secretly aspire to not only look fashionable but actually be comfortable in your own skin? If your answer is yes, then linen is what you are looking for.

If you think they are boring, dull and predominantly men's fashion apparel - it's time to change that mindset. Like designer Payal Khandwala says, "Nowadays, linens are dyed to bold colours, so one need not limit themselves to pastel shades. If they are teamed with whites and blacks, they can create a dramatic effect." It's not only the comfort they provide but also their versatility, that designers Khushboo and Prem swear by, "From the little black evening dress to casual resort wear, linen is at home in virtually any setting. The moment linen blends with silk - the texture and fall exceeds to a different level. This makes it look rich and classy. A sheath or multi-panel dress, with a subtle touch of embroidery will surely give a cosmopolitan and glamorous look to the wearer." Since it allows the body to breathe, this exotic nature-inspired fabric is befitting for warm climates. With proper care, linen can be a timelessly stylish wardrobe staple.

Sport linen in bright colours

Linen palazzos look great when teamed with waistcoats and silk tanks, while linen tunics can be worn with silk scarves or silk pajamas.

"With the right kind of accessories, the classic, no frills linen silhouette can be completely transformed to something unconventional," says duo Khushboo and Prem.

Classic: If you invest in a solid coloured sheath linen dress, there's a lot you can do with it. Wear a strand of pearls and glossy leather pumps. Apart from office, party or picnic, it can be the perfect go-to outfit, when you don't know your event or audience!

Ethnic: A classic white linen kurti can be transformed with some silver junk jewellery or wooden bangles. Try wearing this with wedge-heeled sandals.

Experimental: "Get an edgy look by sporting the highlight of summer - the jumpsuit - all in linen. You will look bubbly, despite the unfriendly weather. A bright-coloured scarf or statement pendant can complete the look," suggests designer Anita Dongre.

Elegant: A long strand of pearls or a gold chain with occasional crystals, delicate strappy heels and a minimalistic clutch - just the accessories you need for an evening event.

Glam doll: Team your linen jacket with hot pants to get a chic look. A pair of heels to this outfit will give you a stunning silhouette.

Summery: A wooden bangle bracelet and some sandals with wood or cork heels in nude tones. Though simple, this look is stylish and seasonal.

Preppy: Top your linen dress with a cardigan tied at the shoulders, or a square scarf tied at the throat. Add a canvas tote in a candy-coloured hue!

Versatile: Pair linen pants with a cashmere sweater in the fall, a silk blouse in spring, or a cotton tee in the summer.

Embellished: Designer James Ferreira says, "To glamourise linen, you could embroider it with sequins and Swarovski. Machine embroidery and thread work also look great.

Weekend: Along with a bold coloured linen shirt or tunic, wear a plastic necklace or wooden beads in a complimenting colour, and pair these with leather thong sandals. Add a floppy straw hat and you are ready for a weekend getaway.
