Go floral and feminine this summer

International designers are modernising flower power on the runway. Darling buds are all over the high street. So, this summer is the perfect time for floral fantasies

From tiny flowers that could pass for polka dots, to lace, to covering every millimetre of an outfit, flower power has re-emerged as one of this summer's hottest trends. And the best part is that it's versatile. It can be monochromatic, pastel, neon or jewel-toned. It can be dressed up or down, and is appropriate in some form for almost any occasion. Little wonder then, that designers have cranked up the volume on last season's delicate florals and turned out modern updates. While in India, Krishna Mehta, Ritu Kumar, Atsu Sekhose, Bhairavi Jaikishan and Rohit Bal went down the flowery path, in the US (New York Fashion Week) Thakoon did floral prints with a vivid red and blue Bollywood reference. The resort and spring/summer collections at Paris, Milan and London fashion weeks throbbed with a floral fetish.

Proenza Schouler added a dose of thunder to their florals with an island of yellow and blue. Altuzarra's white spots luxe leather panel dress showcased his bold Hawaiian-style flowers in a modern way. Alexander Wang made florals badass. Rodarte's collection was inspired by iconic artist Vincent Van Gogh's sunflowers. Peter Som gave an update to eveningwear with an explosion of blue floral chiffon. Prabal Gurung featured engineered floral motifs inspired by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki's Sensual Flowers series. Read on for a bouquet of different ways to sport the trend.

    Flower power

So you've got a furtive fetish for floral but are bored of incorporating this trend only in your outfits? These flower-patterned accessories are the perfect dash of spring you can add to enhance your day-to-day wear. Neckpieces, rings, earrings, hairclips, scarves, watches, hats — the things in which you can sport these gorgeous blooms are endless! Just make sure that you accessorise these statement pieces with solid apparel and not head-to-toe prints.

    Bags to grab

Add a statement floral tote, satchel, clutch or boho bag with floral prints or appliques to your look. Take a floral tote or satchel to work. Spice up your party look with an applique clutch or a floral print bag. Make sure you wear a solid top or bottom with the bag. If you wish to wear a floral printed or embroidered dress, make sure your floral bag has the same colour scheme.

    Adorable footwear

This year, designers took the floral trend and painted it onto shoes, creating the most adorable footwear we've seen in a while. Floral shoes of all kinds — oxfords, wedges, and pumps — are a refreshing and easy way to inject girlishness. Bring out a specific colour palette in your shoe by sliding into a solid top that matches one of the flower hues. It will pull the look together. However, if you're feeling daring, mix up your floral prints with patterned top and pants.
