    Microsoft launches wearable fitness device for $199

    Microsoft Corp launched a device called "Microsoft Band" that will allow users to monitor their fitness and exercise regime, marking the world`s largest software company`s debut into the wearable technology market.


    The wrist-worn device has sensors that monitor pulse rate, measure calorie burn and track sleep quality, Microsoft said in a blog post.


    Microsoft said the device will be available in the United States in limited quantities from Thursday for $199.


    Apple Inc unveiled a smart watch on Sept. 9 that will combine health and fitness tracking with communications and will go on sale in early 2015, while Samsung Electronics Co unveiled its Galaxy Gear smart watch in September 2013. The Apple Watch will be priced at $349.


    Microsoft also launched a health app called "Microsoft Health" that includes a cloud service for users to store and combine health and fitness data.


    The Microsoft Health app will collect data from the fitness band and will work on iPhones and Android smartphones, as well as its own Windows Phone.

    Four types of exercise

    These 4 types of exercise are the most important, according to the National Institute on Aging:


    • Endurance.
    • These exercises boost heart rate and breathing over a period of time. They are good for the heart, lungs and circulation. They also help prevent or delay some diseases. Examples are: walking, running, biking, swimming, dancing, or any other activity done without stopping for a period of time.




    • Strength training.
    • Some examples are: weight training or body weight exercises such as push ups or pull ups. Lifting weights make older adults strong enough to do what they need to do – and like to do.




    • Balance.
    • These exercises help prevent falls, a major cause of disability in older adults. Try practicing balancing on 1 foot trying to increase the length of time one is able to do it over time and then adding some movement of the eyes or hands to make it more difficult.



    • Stretching.
    • Some examples are: flexibility exercises, yoga, tai chi, Pilates, anything that makes one try to increase the range of motion of a joint. These exercises help keep the body limber and flexible (be sure you have a sturdy chair to grab on to).

    Step 1

    Lie flat on your back and place your hands behind your head.

    Bend your knees and bring them up so that your thighs and hips form a 90 degree angle, calves parallel to the floor.

    With elbows flared lift your shoulder blades off the floor and hold the position. This is your starting position.

    Step 2



    Twist your upper body in one direction bringing the elbow to the opposite knee while fully extending your other leg.

    Hold and then return back to the starting position to repeat in the opposite direction.

    Step 1
    Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

    Place your hands behind head.

    Step 2

    Raise your shoulder blades off the ground and lift your legs off the floor and bend knees are to 90 degrees.

    Then slowly pedal them in the air, alternating as if riding a bicycle.
