450th Anniversary of St. Basils Cathedral:

Google marks the 450th anniversary of Moscow's Saint Basil's Cathedral with a commemorative doodle on its home page. Known by various names, including the Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, Saint Basil the Blessed, Pokrovsky Cathedral, Russian Svyatoy Vasily Blazhenny and Pokrovsky Sobo, it was built by Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) to commemorate Russia's victories over Kazan and Astrakhan.

The construction of the Russian Orthodox church began in 1554 and was completed in 1561. Originally named the Holy Trinity Cathedral, over the centuries it became known as the place where St. Basil is buried. The church is located at Red Square, the centre of the city of Moscow.

Russia will celebrate the 450th anniversary of St. Basil's Cathedral by opening an exhibition dedicated to the so-called "holy fool" who gave his name to the soaring structure of bright-hued onion domes that is a quintessential image of Russia.

The eccentrically devout St. Basil wore no clothes even during the harsh Russian winters and was one of the very few Muscovites who dared to lambast tyrannical Czar Ivan the Terrible.

Ivan, whose gory purges claimed tens of thousands of lives, feared St. Basil as "a seer of people's hearts and minds," according to one chronicle. He personally carried St. Basil's coffin to a grave right outside the Kremlin. The cathedral, constructed to commemorate Ivan's victory over Mongol rulers, was built on the burial site.

The structure was designed by two Russian architects, Posnik and Barma. Some sources, though, attribute it to an Italian architect who was blinded after the completion so that he could never build anything as majestic again. The structure got its vivid colours, in which we can see it today, in several stages from the 1680s to 1840s.

The building was severely shelled during the 1917 Bolshevik takeover of the Kremlin and was patched up during the subsequent civil war and famine.
Early Communist leaders - who persecuted countless clerics of all faiths and destroyed tens of thousands of religious buildings - wanted St. Basil's dynamited as it blocked the way to military parades, and only the cathedral's conversion into a museum saved it.

A century earlier, Napoleon Bonaparte also ordered St. Basil's blown up during his army's hasty retreat from Moscow in 1812, but a heavy rain put down the burning fuses.

The design of its nine onion-shaped, multicoloured domes combine the traditions of Russian wooden architecture with Byzantine and Islamic influences into a unique structure.

Batalov said the restoration focused on recreating the way the building looked by the late 17th century, when the nine domes were united by a wraparound floor.
By that time, St. Basil's became a symbolic New Jerusalem and the center of Palm Sunday walks, when the Moscow Patriarch approached it sitting on a donkey to recreate Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem.

Apart from the static image doodles Google also puts up animated and interactive doodles. The last interactive doodle was to celebrate the 96th birthday of the country and jazz guitarist, songwriter and inventor, Les Paul.

சென்ற செப்டம்பர் 27ல் கூகுள் தன் 13 வது பிறந்த நாளைக் கொண்டாடியது. ஏதேனும் சிறப்பு பெற்ற நாளாக இருந்தால், அதற்கேற்ற வகையில் தன் கூகுள் இலச்சினையை வடிவமைத்து வழங்குவது கூகுள் தேடுதளத்தின் சிறப்பாகும். இதனைத் தன் ஒவ்வொரு பிறந்த நாளுக்கும் கூகுள் மேற்கொண்டு வருகிறது. இந்த ஆண்டில், தன் பெயரான கூகுள் என்ற சொல்லுக்குப் பின்னர் ஓர் ஆச்சரியக் குறியினை அமைத்து டூடுலாகக் (Doodle) காட்டியது கூகுள் நிறுவனம். (ஆங்கிலத்தில் Doodle என்பது, பொறுப்பின்றி எதனையேனும் கிறுக்கலாக அமைக்கும் சொல்லைக் குறிக்கும்.) அத்துடன் இலச்சினையே மறைக்கும் அளவிற்கு பிறந்தநாள் கேக், அன்பளிப்புகள், தொப்பிகள் மற்றும் பலூன்கள் இருந்தன. இனி, கூகுள் நடந்து வந்த பாதையைப் பார்க்கலாம்.

1999: சில மாதங்களே கார் ஷெட்டில் கூகுள் இயங்கியது. ஜூன் 1999ல் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்ட நிறுவனமாக, 2 கோடியே 50 லட்சம் டாலர் மூலதன நிதியைக் கொண்டதாக கூகுள் வளர்ந்தது.

2001: கூகுள் ஒரு பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனமாக இயங்கத் தொடங்கியது. முதல் முதலாக ஜப்பானில், டோக்யோவில் தன் அலுவலகக் கிளையைத் தொடங்கியது. Eric Schmidt இதன் தலைமை நிர்வாகியாகப் பொறுப்பேற்று, நிறுவனத் தை வளர்ச்சியில் இமாலய மாற்றங்களைக் கொண்டு வந்தார்.
2002: புதிய சேவைகளை இணைத்து இலவசமாகவே வழங்கும் Google Labs தொடங்கப்பட்டது. ஷாப்பிங் தேடல்களுக்கு Froogle உருவானது. தொடர்ந்து Google News தொடங்கப் பட்டது.
2003: பைரா லேப்ஸ் (Pyra Labs) நிறுவனத்தினை வாங்கி, வலைமனை (Blogs) வசதியைத் தரத் தொடங்கியது. இப்போது கூகுள் புக் சர்ச் (Google Book Search) என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்ற கூகுள் பிரின்ட்ஸ் வசதி தொடங்கப்பட்டது. ஆயிரக்கணக்கான நூல்கள் அதன் டிஜிட்டல் வடிவில் இலவசமாகக் கிடைத்தன.
2004: கூகுளின் தேடல் அட்டவணை பொருட்களின் எண்ணிக்கை (Search Index) 800 கோடியைத் தாண்டியது. கூகுள் ப்ளெக்ஸ் என்ற தன் சொந்தக் கட்டடத்திற்கு கூகுள் தன் அலுவலகத்தினை மாற்றியது. இந்த ஆண்டில் கூகுள் மேற்கொண்ட சிறப்பான மாற்றம், இணைய மெயில் வசதியான, ஜிமெயில் தளத்தைத் தன் ரசிகர்களுக்கு வழங்கியதுதான். இமெயில் சந்தையில் மட்டுமின்றி, மனித குல வரலாற்றிலும், இது ஒரு பெரிய மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியது.
2005: கூகுள் மேப்ஸ் மீது தன் கவனத்தை கூகுள் திருப்பியது. அத்துடன் கூகுள் ரீடர் மற்றும் கூகுள் அனலிடிக்ஸ் என்ற இரு வேறு வசதிகளும் அறிமுகமாயின. Gmail, Blogger and Search ஆகியவற்றின் மொபைல் பதிப்புகளுக்கும் அடிப்படை அமைக்கப்பட்டது.
2006: யு-ட்யூப் வசதியை வாங்கியது கூகுள் நிறுவனம். கூகுள் மேப்ஸ் விரிவு படுத்தப்பட்டது. கூகுள் டாக்ஸ், ஜிமெயில் ஆகியவற்றின் வாடிக்கையாளர் எண்ணிக்கை புயல் வேகத்தில் உயர்ந்தது. கூகுள் மேப்ஸ் உடன் இணைந்து, கூகுள் தெரு நிலை போட்டோ சேவையினை வழங்கியது.
2008: ஆப்பிள் நிறுவனத்தின் ஐ-போனுடன் போட்டியிடும் வகையில், மொபைல் போன் ஆப்பரேட்டிங் சிஸ்டத்தினை வெளியிட்டது. குரோம் பிரவுசரை வெளியிட்டு, பிரவுசர் யுத்தத்தில் முன்னிலை இடம் பிடித்தது.

Google Doodle Contest For kids

Google has invited childeren from India for its third Doodle4Google contest . The winner’s doodle will be published on Google India’s homepage on Children’s Day 14 November.

The winning entry will receive a laptop with an year’s Internet subscription as well as a Rs 200,000 technology grant for the school the winner represents.

The competition is open for all children from the age group of 5 to 16 years. This year, our chosen theme is ‘India’s gift to the world’. the participants will be clubbed in three different categories- 1st to 3rd Standard, 4th to 6th Standard and 7th to 10th Standard. Top Indian art schools will select the top 200 entries from each category which will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The judges will then shortlist 15 doodles from each category, bringing it down to a total of 45 final Doodles.

All the final entries will be exhibited for public voting and based on the number of votes, one winner from each category will be selected. Each of the winners will receive a technology starter kit which consists of a laptopand an Internet connection. Dennis Hwang, the original Google Doodler, will then choose the final winning Doodle from the total 45 finalists.
Participating in the competition is simple:

• Children studyingin class 1st to 10th can participate in the competition. These will be divided into three categories- 1st to 3rd Standard; 4th to 6th Standard and; 7th to 10th Standard
• All participants must register on the website (Doodle 4 Google 2011 ? Doodle 4 Google - India's gift to the world). The submission may be either individually or through the school. The school route is valid only if the school is organizing to collect and submit the doodles on behalf of their students.
• Last date for submissions is 15th September, 2011.
• After a series of elimination by celebrity panel of judges, 45 best Doodles will be displayed on the gallery. These entries will be open for public voting allowing users to vote for their favorite Doodle in each category.
• This year we will have 3 winners in total one from each group
• Winning Doodle will be uploaded on the Google.co.in homepage on 14th November 2011, Children’s Day and all the winners will get a Technology Starter Package.

So gather those art supplies. All it takes to enter is a drawing on paper using your favorite medium (crayons, markers, colored pencils, whatever!) –

7-year-old’s design to adorn Google’s Children’s Day Doodle

Google’s Doodle is becoming more popular going by the number of entries this year at 1.5 lakh for Nov. 14, Children’s day event.
Won by Varsha Gupta, a seven-year-old student of Ryan International in Greater Noida near Delhi on the theme “India’s contribution to the world”, the doodle is a simple portrayal of six traditional musical instruments to form “Google”.
“Varsha Gupta’s doodle of the Google logo artfully depicts how India is a land of different cultures and music plays an important role in it. The doodle artfully represents many musical instruments that India has introduced to the to the world- Tabla, Sarod, Veena and Shehnai,” wrote Robin Joseph, Google’s Consumer Marketing executive on Google’s blog.
The contribution to Google’s Doodles are growing since 2009. The competition was open to school children of all grades and applications submitted by schools only were considered. In turn, the school from where the winning entry comes will get Rs. 200,000. The winner will get a technology starter package — a laptop and one-year free internet connection.
Apart from Varsha Gupta, in Group I of Grades 1-3, Shibajyoti Choudhury from Jamshedpur won the group prize for his doodle titled ‘Developing excellent India and World’ In Group II of Grades 4-6, Abhinav R. from Coimbatore won the prize for his doodle titled ‘India’s contribution to the world – Tradition’. Finally, in group III of Grades 7-10, Nishi Bordia from Indore won the prize for her doodle titled ‘India’s gift to the world – India itself’.
Last year, Akshay Raj, grade IX student from St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore, won similar Doodle 4 Google competition for the winning doodle titled “Technically and Naturally Growing India”.
