    Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites

Mosquito Bites are probably the most widespread and the most annoying parasitic problem to all mankind. Mosquitoes are found in almost all parts of the world and the incessant itch from their bites can be horribly aggravating. When these tiny pests bite us the irritation and reaction we experience is caused due to saliva from the mosquitoes that contains anti-coagulants, enabling them to feed without clotting of blood.

The body’s immune system therefore responds and we experience the familiar symptoms. The reaction generally dissipates within a few hours and the actual reaction or effects of the bite will depend upon the individual’s sensitivity.

Mosquitoes also do pose a risk as they are known to be carriers of certain diseases like the west nile virus, dengue fever, and Malaria, but in other cases the greater risk is of secondary infection from scratching at the bites itself. Precautions are the best treatment for mosquito bites. Preventive measures can be quite effective and are the best way to avoid the risks from mosquito bites. Despite preventive measures however it’s not uncommon for mosquitoes to still manage to sneak in a bite. In such situations natural remedies can come in handy, particularly in the outdoors.

Here are some natural remedies that are believed to help treat a mosquito bite.
    • Banana peels can serve some use here. All you have to do is apply the pulpy surface of the peels against the bite to relieve the itch.

    • Cleanse the bite with water and soap.

    • Apply an ice pack to the bite to reduce the swelling.

    • Application of a drying agent can also help to draw out fluid. You can simply make a paste of baking soda with salt water and apply it to the bite. Similarly toothpaste also help draw out liquids as it dries on the skin.

    • Alcohols are also quite effective as a remedy for the itchiness of the bites. You could use almost any alcohol like vodka or even hand sanitizers.

    • Peppermint oil works quite effectively as a numbing agent and can therefore offer quick relief from the irritation and pain. It also works as a natural mosquito repellant. For this reason many people choose to use toothpaste as an ointment.

    • According to some practitioners of aromatherapy applying lavender or tea tree oils with a swab can also help relieve the situation.

    • You could also cut a slice of onion and apply it gently over the bite to relieve the irritation.

Re: Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites

    Baking Soda

    • One very common cure for the itchy mosquito bite is to make a baking soda-based paste. Baking soda is a great natural itch reliever, and it is also good for reducing inflammation of the skin. Simply pour 2 to 3 tbsp. into a bowl and add water to make a paste. Don't add to much water, as you don't want the paste to be runny. Then apply the paste to the affected area.

    White Vinegar

    • White vinegar is not only a great natural home cleanser, but it is also good for mosquito bites, as it can relieve itch and is a natural disinfectant. Just dab a small amount onto a cotton ball and apply to the bite, or if you have numerous bites on your body, add 2 to 3 cups of white vinegar to warm bathwater.

    The Banana Peel Remedy

    • Although it may sound a little strange, a banana peel can be very effective in treating mosquito bites. This is in part due to the potassium and various antioxidants that lie not only in the banana, but in the peel as well. To treat a bite simply take the peel and apply the inside of the peel to the affected area. This remedy is great because it is natural, easy and provides a healthy snack.

    Lemons

    • Along with the itch relief, lemons can also help to prevent infection, as they are also a great natural disinfectant. They also contain antioxidants that can help the skin repair faster. Take one lemon and slice it. Remove any seeds and apply the lemon slice to your bite for some citrus-infused relief.

    Heat it Up

    • A hot washcloth or bath can be effective for treating the itch of a bite. Heat naturally draws out infection and foreign bodies under the skin. Thus, as the itchiness of a mosquito bite is caused by the saliva of the mosquito under your skin, a hot compress, bath or shower is great at drawing out the saliva and alleviating your pain.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is effective at fighting infection and is a natural anti-inflammatory treatment. It also assists in skin repair. You can find natural tea tree oil at most natural health food stores. To treat your bite, apply two drops of tea tree oil to the area.

    Warnings

    • If your bite has severe swelling and is accompanied by severe pain or fever, you should see your doctor immediately, as you may have a serious allergy or you may have contracted a serious disease. If you are traveling outside the United States make sure to research which countries, usually tropical areas, carry a higher risk of contracting a mosquito-borne illness.

Re: Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites

    Salt

This seems to be the quickest of all home remedies for mosquito bites. Simply moisten the bite area and then rub table salt on the moistened area. Itching should cease immediately.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

To relieve the itching, rub apple cider vinegar directly on the mosquito bites.

    Toothpaste

Toothpaste is another one of the fastest home remedies for mosquito bites. Just dab a bit of toothpaste onto the mosquito bites and the itching should stop very quickly.

Peppermint toothpaste is by far the best.

    Calamine Lotion

Apply calamine lotion to relieve the itching caused by mosquito bites.

    Ammonia

Ammonia is another one of the home remedies for mosquito bites that is a very effective "itch eliminator". Apply ammonia on the bites.

    Witch Hazel

Make a paste out of witch hazel and baking soda. Apply it and leave it on for about 15 minutes.

    Aloe

Aloe seems to top the list of all home remedies for mosquito bites when it comes to both eliminating the itch and healing the wound.

You can grow your own aloe and use the gel from the leaves, or you can use a commercial aloe gel product.

    Lemon

The biggest problem derived from scratching one's itch is the threat of infections.

So, for itching that just won't stop, and if you just have to scratch, cut a lemon in half and scratch your itch with the soft pulpy side of it.

This will reduce the chances of getting an infection from scratching with your fingernails.

    Deodorant

Rub deodorant on the bites and the relief will be almost instant. This also works for other types of itchy bites.
