    How to Prevent Gout

    How to Prevent Gout

It is estimated that 2 million people are currently suffering from gout, a form of arthritis created by too much uric acid in the body.

Uric acid is produced by the liver and from there it enters the bloodstream and the joints.

Among the many causes of gout are a hereditary metabolic disorder, food allergies, kidney failure and a diet rich in foods like soft drinks, coffee, meat, shellfish and other heavy foods.

The crystallization of uric acid in the joints is extremely painful, and sometimes difficult to treat, therefore the best way to deal with gout is to try to prevent it.

This article will tell you how to prevent gout.

    Maintain a healthy weight.
Gout is more common among people who are overweight. Unfortunately, strict dieting has also been known to produce gout attacks, so it is a good idea to try to arrive at a healthy weight and then maintain it.

Drink plenty of water and water-based liquids.
Aim to consume between 8 and 16 8 oz. (237 ml) glasses of water a day. This adds up to between 64 and 128 oz. (1.9 to 3.8 l) of fluids each day.

    Limit your alcohol consumption.
Alcohol inhibits the processing of uric acid in your liver. Research has suggested large amounts of beer can be especially bad for gout sufferers, while a limited quantity of wine is less likely to cause harm.

Limit your intake of foods rich in purines, which later break down into uric acid during digestion.
These foods include red meat, shellfish, tofu, peas, organ meat, anchovies, herring, asparagus and mushrooms.

Eat potassium rich foods, such as spinach, avocado, dried peaches, bananas, orange juice, carrots, a baked potato (with skin), lima beans, yams, cantaloupe or dried yams. The mineral potassium is important in gout prevention because it regulates urate levels in the body.

Drink a glass of lemon water after dinner.
Vitamin C stimulates the production of calcium carbonate, which reduces acids in the body. After dinner, make yourself a lemon drink by squeezing the juice of 1 lemon into an 8 oz. (237 ml) glass of lukewarm water.

Avoid diuretic medications, as they can reduce the amount of potassium in your body. Diuretics increase the amount of urine a body excretes. Many, but not all, diuretics increase the secretion of potassium from the body.

Get tested by a doctor if you have a family history of gout, which can be a hereditary metabolic disease. The risk rises for men over 40 years old and women after menopause. Men are at the highest risk for gout

Consider taking quercetin (with bromelain) or vitamin C supplements. Research has shown that these supplements can reduce the uric acid levels in the body. Only start supplements if your doctor feels you are at a high risk for gout.
