    Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS, by its initials) is a set of abnormalities that children have whose mothers consume alcohol during pregnancy and it is the leading cause of mental retardation. Once the alcohol enters the bloodstream of the child remains there in very high concentrations over long periods of time, causing brain damage and injures other body organs.

It is not known yet which is the amount of alcohol that may harm the fetus, but that even if alcohol is "soft" such as wine or beer are harmful. It is also true that birth defects and development may differ, depending on how long the fetus was exposed to alcohol during development.

Babies with fetal alcohol syndrome may experience the following physical symptoms:

    Low birth weight
Born very small and retarded growth
    Small head
    Small eyes
    Short and flattened nose
    Cheeks flattened
    small Quijadas
Unusually shaped ears of the mother
    Thin upper lip
    Tremors or agitation
    Visual and hearing
    Cardiac defects
    Brain with little or malformation
Minor defects in the joints which may restrict movements
    Teeth prone to cavities
    Vision problems
    Ear infections

As the child grows may develop other symptoms, including:

    Difficulty eating and sleeping
    Delay in learning to talk
    Learning disability
    Low IQ
    Mental retardation
    Little coordination
    A range of short attention
    Behavioral problems
Little ability to control their impulses
    Trouble socializing with other children

There is no treatment for these children because there is no cure. As Enloe Medical Center said "For the baby the hangover will last a lifetime". Yes we need a supportive environment in which the routines are maintained, are set rules, limits and consequences, which praise the desirable behavior and which are not threatening and that violence increases the risk that the child learns to react similarly. The child with this syndrome needs to go to special education.

It is also advisable for parents to attend professional help to learn to cope with caring for a child with birth problems. Training includes forms for parents to control behavioral problems and stress control techniques.
