Sinusitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatments!!

Sinusitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatments!!-sinusitis.jpg

    Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an infection of certain cavities in the facial portion of the skull, called Sinuses. Sinuses are present behind the forehead, nasal bones, cheeks and eyes. These Sinuses contain mucous and air, in a normal healthy person the mucous is able to drain out of the sinuses allowing the air to circulate inside freely.

Sinusitis mostly occurs in the sinuses under the eyes which are called maxillary sinuses and the sinuses below the outer nasal bone called the ethmoid sinuses while the more serious infections could be those which involve the osteomyelitis bone and could extend into the brain which eventually would be life threatening.

Sinusitis may be Acute (when its symptoms last for 4 weeks) and Chronic, when swelling and inflammation of the sinuses are present for longer than 3 months.

    Causes

The infection may be caused due to virus, bacteria or fungus. It occurs when the thickening of the mucous in the sinuses increases to such an extent that it causes blockade of the free movement of air. This creates a suitable environment for the growth of these germs (viruses, bacteria and fungus) in the sinuses and thus an inflammation occurs. The thickening of the mucous layer may be caused due to the malfunctioning of cilia (small hair in the sinuses), a deviated nasal bone and / or colds and allergies.

    Apart from these the following could increase the risk of developing Sinusitis;

    • Allergic Rhinitis or Hay Fever
    • A weak immune system due to HIV etc
    • Smoking

Acute Sinusitis is caused by the growth of bacteria in the sinuses while Chronic Sinusitis may be caused be either a bacterial or a fungal infection.

    Symptoms

Cough, Facial tenderness, Fatigue, Fever, Headache, Nasal Congestion and discharge, Pain in the face, Pain behind the eyes, Postnasal drip, Sore throat and Toothache etc.

    Diagnosis / Tests:

    • X-RAY DNS
    • CT Scan
    • MRI Scan

If Sinusitis keeps reappearing after certain intervals, than Allergy Tests and Nasal cultures etc may be useful procedures for testing.

    Specialist to be consulted:

Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist

    Treatment

    Self Care

Clean your face several times a day by a warm and moist washcloth, drink plenty of water or fluids, Inhale steam at least 3 times daily, Use the Nasal Spray several times a day.

    Specialized Medical Treatment

The medical treatment to be given by the specialist / doctor depends upon the causes of sinusitis.

    • If Sinusitis is due to allergy, than it is treated with antihistamines, nasal sprays, Decongestants or allergy shots. Moreover the best treatment for allergic sinusitis is prevention. Try to abstain from the allergy triggering circumstances/objects (every allergic patient knows which things he is allergic to).

    • If the infection is caused by Virus, then antibiotics are not the treatment; instead it is treated with: acetaminophen (Tylenol), decongestants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or NSAIDs (ibuprofen etc).

    • If the infection is Bacterial sinusitis, then it will be treated with antibiotics like: amoxicillin (Amoxil), azithromycin (Zithromax), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cefaclor (Ceclor), levofloxacin (Levaquin), loracarbef (Lorabid).

    • Moreover, a bony lesion or deviation of the nasal bone that causes sinusitis may require an operation.
