    Epileptic Seizures

Seizures involve sudden involuntary alterations in behavior or consciousness resulting from excessive electrical activity in the brain.

In itself a seizure is not an emergency ..... Usually the person knows their condition and also the management ....

If someone is having a seizure:
    • Loosen clothing around the person's neck.
    • Do not try to hold the person down or restrain them. This can result in injury.
    • Do not insert any objects in the person's mouth. This can also cause injury.
    • Reassure concerned bystanders who may be upset and ask them to give the person room.
    • Remove sharp objects (glasses, furniture, and other objects) from around the person to prevent injury.
    • After the seizure, it is helpful to lay the person on their side to maintain an open airway and prevent the person from inhaling any secretions.
    • After a seizure, the person may be confused and should not be left alone.

In many cases, especially if the person is known to have epilepsy, it is not necessary to call for an ambulance or doctor.......

A seizure is considered an emergency when

    • It lasts a long time ( > 5 mins) or when multiple seizures occur close together and the person doesn't recover between seizures.
    • Injuries have resulted from the seizure.
    • The person experiences persistent breathing difficulty.
    • The person having the seizure also has a fever.
    • The person experiences persistent confusion or remains unconscious.
    • The person is pregnant, is a diabetic, is injured or appears to have life-threatening conditions.
    • This is the first time the person has had a seizure, or, in the case of an established epileptic, the seizure represents a marked change from the type or duration of seizure typically experienced.
    • A seizure that has occurred in water.
    • The person has hit his or her head during a seizure and becomes difficult to arouse, is vomiting, or complains of blurry vision.

If any of above noted or suspected call for medical help ........

    Recovery position

Putting someone in the recovery position will ensure their airway remains clear and open. It also ensures that any vomit or fluid will not cause them to choke.

To place someone in the recovery position:

    • Roll a person on their side with their arms and upper leg at right angles to the body to support them.
    • Tuck their upper hand under the side of their head so that their head is on the back of the hand.
    • Open their airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin.
    • Monitor their breathing and pulse continuously.

If their injuries allow you to, turn the person onto their other side after 30 minutes.

If you think a person may have a spinal injury, do not attempt to move them until the emergency services reach you, unless their airway is obstructed.
If it is necessary to open their airway, place your hands on either side of their face and gently lift their jaw with your fingertips to open the airway. Take care not to move their neck.

If you must move the person (for example, because they are vomiting, choking or in danger of further injury), you need someone else to help you roll them.
One person should be at the head and another along the side of the injured person. Work together to keep the person's head, neck and back aligned while gently rolling the person onto one side.
