How does music help my growing baby?

Your unborn baby can hear and respond to sounds from the seventh month onwards. So if you're listening to music, it's likely that she will be able to hear it too. Some experts believe that listening to music will stimulate your baby's brain development as well as develop her sense of hearing. You could listen to the soothing tunes of instruments like the sitar or the violin. You could also chant pregnancy shlokas or sing songs to your baby. A good place to start is to hear our pregnancy shlokas rendered in traditional ragas that create soothing music for expectant mothers. Many stores also sell music made especially for pregnant women. Besides stimulating your baby, listening to music can be an excellent stress buster for you.

How do I keep positive throughout my pregnancy?

Even the best humoured of us have bad days or are prone to tension and worry. And during pregnancy, raging hormones can make you more emotional than usual. So even though you might want to keep happy and stress free throughout, you are likely to have ups and downs. You can help yourself be happy by thinking of the things you like doing and trying extra hard to take time out for them. This will be easier to do with your first pregnancy.

If you do not have time for a hobby, even reading books or seeing a good movie can do the trick. According to Garbh sanskar, it is believed that reading educative books during pregnancy will pass on the wisdom to the child. So for ages, pregnant women have been encouraged to read mythological stories and scriptures, in the hope that good moral values would reach their babies. If you'd prefer something more modern, you could read other books. Whether it's about cooking, self-help, romance, nursery rhymes or fairy tales, read something that makes you feel happy. A good comedy or movie with a happy ending can also lift your spirits.

You could also just simply remember good moments in your life, or go on a holiday and soak up the picturesque surroundings. Or perhaps, you could put up photographs of your loved ones, around you.

If you are going through a tough time in your life, try some of our tips to help you cope through periods of stress. Also read about whether your baby can be affected by your stress or distress.

What kind of food is good during pregnancy?

Of everything you do while you are pregnant, eating right is probably the thing that will affect your baby most directly. Garbha sanskar recommends a sattvik diet or a pure diet during pregnancy. This means eating only freshly-made meals using fresh vegetables. It also means eating in moderation. A sattvik dish is one which contains vital nutrients in balanced proportions. Sattvik food also has all the different kinds of taste - sweet, bitter, sour, salty, pungent and astringent. A sattvik diet also means avoiding food that is spicy, fermented and which contains preservatives. It is believed that such a diet will keep you and your baby healthy and pure. Of course if you have a craving for chocolate, there's no harm in indulging once in a while! To know more about what to eat during pregnancy, see our eating right area.

Check with your doctor before making any major changes to your diet. Read our article if you need help making a diet plan.

What are the benefits of yoga during pregnancy?

Yoga during pregnancy is said to:

    • Increase the flexibility and elasticity of your muscles, which would be useful during labour
    • Improve your blood circulation, which will help to reduce pregnancy related backaches and leg cramps
    • Increase your capacity to bear pain during pregnancy and labour
    • Help in keeping your weight in check
    • Calm and relax you. The pranayama and breathing techniques employed in yoga are particularly relaxing.

    • How will meditation and praying help during pregnancy?

Meditation is an integral part of yoga as well as Garbha sanskar. It helps to give you peace of mind and improve your concentration. In doing so, it is believed that you are helping your baby in the same way. You are helping her develop the ability to stay calm in stressful circumstances.

Meditation involves trying to achieve a 'zero state of mind' which is when you are thinking about nothing and your mind is blank. While trying to meditate, you can visualise your baby and with each breath think of all the wonderful experiences you want to share with her. Many mothers find that this process brings them joy and helps them connect better with their growing babies.

Praying and other spiritual activities is an important part of Garbha sanskar. It is believed to play a role in the spiritual development of your baby. There are mantras and shlokas that are specifically recited for the unborn baby. These include prayers to bless the baby with good attributes like intelligence, good health, happiness and good moral values. Hear our pregnancy shlokas that pray for the protection of the expectant mother and her baby.

    • How will creativity help in pregnancy?

Taking up a hobby during pregnancy keeps your mind active, and is believed to enhance your baby's overall development. You can try your hand at various creative pastimes like painting and knitting. Nowadays, many expecting mothers try their hand at maths, classical music, chess or science-based crafts in an effort to enhance their baby's intelligence. If nothing else, a hobby gives you something interesting to do, and is an excellent stress buster.

    • How do I communicate with my unborn baby?

Caressing, talking and singing to your bump are popular ways of communicating. You and your husband could take turns to caress your bump. You could talk to your baby about a different topic every day. Tell her how happy you are to have her in your life, share funny anecdotes about the family, or talk about your plans for her future. You may find this bizarre at first. Give it time, it will soon grow on you.

Communicating with your baby, or Garbha sanwaad, is considered to be the most important aspect of Garbha sanskar. It is believed to stimulate her senses, and contribute to her mental and physical growth. It can also go a long way towards building a strong bond between you and your baby.

    • Are there any new techniques taught at Garbha sanskar workshops these days?

The concept of Garbha sanskar is becoming increasingly popular. As a result, a number of Garbha sanskar workshops have cropped up to help pregnant mothers understand and practise Garbha sanskar. Some workshops have introduced new techniques based on the same principle of positively enhancing the development of the mum and her baby. Here are some of them:

Autosuggestion and autohypnosis: This is a meditation technique based on the principle that any idea exclusively occupying the mind can turn into reality. So this technique requires the pregnant mother to make her mind go completely blank, and then start imagining her baby inside is growing well and is healthy. This way you are willing your baby to be healthy, and you will also be creating a positive bond with her.

      Colour therapy:
This is the use of light and colour to balance your physical, emotional, spiritual or mental energy. It is believed that such therapy can uplift you and consequently your baby. Some believe that it develops your baby's eyes.

      Aromatherapy:
This is the use of essential oils and other aromatic substances to soothe the body and mind and sharpen your five senses. Some workshops also provide herbal medicines or supplements. It is best to check with your doctor before you take any of these.
