12 Expert Tips for Moms Carrying Twins

12 Expert Tips for Moms Carrying Twins

If you are carrying twins and have loads of questions that are popping up in your mind with every passing day, your search ends here.

This mini guide brings you a concise list of tips, tricks and advice right from the expert's room to help you cope with twin pregnancy.

This will not only answer your questions but also make the nine months a breeze even with double the weight that you are carrying around.

Here’s a checklist of all the things you should look out for if you will be blessed with twin joys soon.

    Check ups:

“If a pregnant woman is carrying twins, the risk factors multiply as there are two foetuses. But there is little to fear if you are regular with your check-ups,” says Dr. Aruna Kalra, Consultant obsterician & Gynaecologist, Paras Hospital Gurgaon.

It is important to have more ultrasound tests and antenatal appointments. Visit your doctor regularly just to make sure all’s well. If you have a complicated pregnancy or your twins share a placenta, then your visits to the doc may rise considerably.

    Family support:

Dr. Madhu Ahuja, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics And Gynaecology, Max Healthcare, says, “It is important to have family support. Mother, sisters, mother-in-law and husband play a vital part here since the pregnant woman needs more rest, especially in later months of her pregnancy. Even though rest is important they should also remain active and mobile.”

    Rest:
You will need plenty of rest, since carrying two babies around is bound to tire you down. Make rest a priority and try to take day time naps if getting sleep at night becomes difficult.

Dr. Kalra advices that “Women carrying twins, should avoid lying down on their backs and should use either of their sides to save the back from strain.”

    Complications:
Dr. Birbala Rai, Sn. Consulting Gynaecologist, Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute says, “Bleeding in later stages of pregnancy due to high blood pressure might occur. So, it is essential to control your blood pressure. If not taken care of, it could also result in severe growth retardation and risk of high diabetes in babies.”

A rare complication in identical twins is twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), in which one twin (recipient) receives too much blood, and the other (donor) receives too little.

Your doctor will check for these complications during your antenatal appointments. Dr. Kalra says, “Chances of pregnancy induced high blood pressure increase once the 6th month of pregnancy has passed, this is common with twin pregnancies.”

    Abortion:

“Risk of abortion is very high in early pregnancy so, it is better to avoid intercourse, weight lifting and strenuous exercises. In case of complications bed rest is very important,” adds Dr. Raj

    Deficiencies:

“Adequate intake of iron after three months is important as risk of anaemia is very high in twins,” recommends Dr. Rai. Anaemia is common with moms carrying twins. So, keep a check on your iron levels and do not skip iron supplements if you have already been prescribed these.

“A mother will put on atleast 15 to 20 kgs of weight and will be at a higher risk of developing low haemoglobin, anaemia, protein and iron deficiencies,” says Dr. Kalra.

    Diet:
Eat well so that you, as well as, your babies get the required nutrients. Your daily meals should include a variety of things.

Dr. Rai advices, “Intake of folate (folic acid) in the first trimester is essential to prevent fetal abnormalities in the babies. A diet which is rich in minerals, proteins and vitamins is essential for proper growth of the twins.”

Try and eat little and often, rather than following the three meals-a-day rule. This ensures that as the pregnancy progresses, you won’t feel ravenously hungry. “A diet low in sodium and high in iron and protein should be consumed. Protein deficiency is something that should be kept at bay. Iron and folic acid supplements should be taken if prescribed

    Weight:
Eating too much (believing you need more due to twins) might do more harm than good. It will make you feel uncomfortable and bloated if you put on excessive weight which will expose you to other health risks.

    Sicknesses:
It can be difficult to eat well sometimes, due to common pregnancy symptoms like nausea, constipation, indigestion and sickness, so drink plenty of fluids. Speak to your doctor if the sickness continues beyond the first trimester or you cannot keep any food or fluids down. “Problems of indigestion, backache, swelling of feet will prevail. So take help from a physiotherapist or obstetrician. The patient may even consider quitting work as twin pregnancies usually carry higher risks,” explains Dr. Ahuja.

    Premature delivery:
Most twins are prematurely born at 37 weeks and ceasarean and c-section deliveries are more common with twin pregnancy. Dr. Kalra advices to stop working, traveling in local trains and avoid crowded places to prevent any complications and strain on the mom.

    Breathlessness:

“Pregnant women sometimes complain of problems of breathlessness which lead to respiratory problems and can cause harm when delivering.

Women with twins are at a higher risk of breathlessness since, they are carrying double the weight than a normal pregnancy. Breathing exercises are important,” suggests Dr. Kalra

    Hospital:
“Choose a hospital that has all the facilities and will be able to take care of any complications during the pregnancy and delivery.

Problems like post partum bleeding and maternal mortality are major issues of concern,” concludes Dr. Aruna Kalra.
