Gestational Diabetes (GD) in Pregnancy
Dearest Mother’s,
It has been eleven long beautiful and sweet years in to antenatal counselling, long because I have savoured every moment of it and lived in it completely. Talking of sweetness brings in a quiver in my tummy as from then to know gradually I have seen the rise in number of pregnant woman developing Gestational Diabetes. Seems as it is so normal and natural for an expecting woman to have high blood sugar levels post 28th week in the third trimester. This affair of change is not a very pleasant one because we need to remember what diabetes does to a diabetic’s organs in their body, the same effect happens on the baby’s developing organs. Once a pregnant woman develops GD she is bound to have the same issue early in to her second pregnancy and become a diabetic early in her life span. Every woman wants the best for her baby; GD is primarily a result of unhealthy irregular food intake pattern with lack of exercising and high stress in life. So unconsciously we are making very wrong choices for the most precious thing in our life and affecting the growing foetus is an undesirable manner.
Some basic facts about Gestational Diabetes
· An expecting woman who has a strong family history falls in to a high risk category.
· Pregnancies planned beyond thirty and above of age are more prone to GD.
· The abnormal rise in blood sugar levels show up in the blood work in the third trimester.
· That GD affects the size of the head of the baby reducing the chances of natural birth increasing the incidence of C-section is only the least worrying affects of GD on the baby. There is more to it.
· GD being a life style orientated condition can be easily managed by simple changes in our diet and life style, it is well under our control and results are achievable.
· It is safe and essential to take insulin to normalise the blood sugar levels to avoid complications.
· Breakfast lunch and dinner on time and early.
· A small snack every two hourly.
· Cutting out on junk.
· Exercising to bring in to life the fading spunk.
· Through challenging times the ability to chill.
· Cure for GD packed in a pill.

How to Use a Treadmill While Pregnant?
Usage of the treadmill in pregnancy is safe provided the pregnant woman is experienced in using the treadmill before and knows how to safely get on and off the tread mill.
The tread mill should never be inclined in the inclined slope in pregnancy as it strains the knees, walking on a plain level is advisable.
Pregnant woman must always operate the tread mill on manual mode so that the speed can be controlled by the user rather than choosing a prefixed program where the speed and intensity will be changed as per the program.
The treadmill speed levels are kept at normal levels, to increase speed instead of accelerating the speed one can take smaller and more no of steps. In this case if there is a power failure and the tread mill stops abruptly the risks of fall and accidents can be avoided.
Stretching he back calf muscles and the thighs is a must before and especially after a walk any ways.
Intensity and duration is entirely based on pre pregnancy fitness levels, the status of the pregnancy being normal and never beyond a point of breathlessness or discomfort in abdomen back and knees.
If you have any doubt pls free to ask me. Take care…

UTI in Pregnancy
Urinary tract infections occur commonly in pregnancy, in fact it is a very common feature in a women’s life as she steps in to a new role. A UTI occurs in honey mooner’s after the wedding. There is a lot of literature about why it happens.
What is essential for us to know that it could happen and how to deal with it. Intake of plenty of water during all the trimesters of the pregnancy is important. Taking water regularly throughout the day will make this effort useful and not be a nuisance by spending the whole night in the toilet as the negligence of water is corrected at the far end of the day.
Nothing can replace the goodness of water, but other fluids like soups, milk, and butter milk can also be added in the diet. It is most important to empty the bladder often rather than holding back the urine and not using it at public places unless the circumstances are dire.
The urine in the bladder then becomes the Petri dish for the bacteria to grow and an infection comes around. Women should always make it a practice to always wipe the perineum in the direction away from the vagina as they clean up after passing stool.
It is a very healthy practice to pass urine after a sexual intercourse so that the urine flowing down will clean and flush the whole tract.

Summer tips for Pregnant Women
Summer tips for Pregnant Women
The summers are here and with the temperatures rising pregnant women need to take extra care about their fluid intake. The humidity and the dry heat both makes the pregnant women more thirsty and in turn exhausts them.
There is no alternative or better replacement to water; the sudden rise in intake of fruit juices may cause the blood sugars also to rise in the third trimester hence increasing the water intake at regular intervals throughout the day is advisable. Women who stay indoors and in air-conditioned rooms need to also increase their fluid intake as air-condition works on the humidity in the air removing the water from the surroundings.
Water melon, popular summer fruit contains water so eating fresh watermelons is again a nice way to increase fluid intake. Buttermilks, sweet or salted lassies are also a great alternative. The fruit intake should be limited to one or two helping s a day ideally. To prevent a sore throat or infection it is advisable to avoid adding ice to any drink. From entering the home from the hot and humid outside the first glass of water to quench the thirst should preferably be water at room temperature to give the body some time and space to readjust to the change in temperatures.
Mangoes should be eaten sensibly; increased intake of preparations like milk shakes and ice creams can also increase the weight and make the pregnant women prone to gestational diabetes.
Walking and outdoor physical activities should be planned for the evening or mornings when the temperatures are cooler to prevent exertion and dehydration.
Any doubts pls free to ask me….
Take care…

Re: Antenatal/Prenatal/Pregnancy classes in chennai
Dear Madhu,
Hope all is fine on your end. Sending you a few guidelines around which you can rework your diet pattern.
I would also like some details about your prenatal medicines. What are you taking when you take them and please specify if you are on any other tablets other than iron and calcium. And if there are any other medical conditions before or during the pregnancy.
Some basic thumb rules
- The earlier the breakfast the better it is. A breakfast as early as 8:30 to 9 is already late.
- Please wake up and have something to eat immediately, you can have your badam or milk small cup and have your breakfast as early as you can.
- If you do sleep well in the night and can wake up in the morning for a walk then good else choose an ideal time that suits.
- Please do not step out for a walk on an empty stomach any time of the day, intake of a small snack is preferred, have your milk and badam or have a toast or a banana before your walk.
- Please don't stress on fruit juices, I would rather have you eat a fruit and not more than two helping of fruits a day is recommended.
• A meal every two hourly is advisable.
• Lunch closer to 12 is preferable, but latest by 1 or 1:15.
• It is very natural to feel hungry around the evening time hence a heavy snack or a meal is a good idea at this time.
If you take care of these fundamental things you will find a balance and your acidity will be curbed which will prevent you to get in to mindless eating to provide comfort from its affects.
The two hourly meals can be a variety of things in small quantities
• High fibre biscuits
• Nuts and Dry fruits, a handful
• A cup of milk
• Sundal (white or black)
• Butter milk
• A fruit or a few pieces of them.
• Salad
Some basic things
- Eat what you can digest.
- Eat on time. Eating on time will ensure your blood sugar levels are consistent, you will have energy throughout the day. Your body will have faith on you and not start converting everything you eat to fat. You will have a command over your portions and will not crave for junk.
- Don’t skip or delay the big meals or replace them with fruits will increase acidity.
- Don’t stay on an empty stomach for more than two hours have a small bite of anything.
- Drink water on a regular basis throughout the day. There is no other better replacement to water so please stick to more water and avoid fruit juices or tender coconut water regularly. Occasional intake is advisable.
- Avoid junk and fatty food, this kind of food gets difficult to digest.
- Get a good walk, helps digestion.
- Stay happy and cheerful good for the stomach and digestion too.
Please feel free to call or mail if you need further assistance.
Take care

Re: Antenatal/Prenatal/Pregnancy classes in chennai
Dear Madhu,
First, don’t stress about the bad dreams it is very natural. The more consciously you try and avoid something you will find it chasing you around everywhere. If you wake up from a bad dream, drink some water, try some deep breathing and get some fresh air and don’t worry it will not harm your baby.
Try reading some light books, listening to music you prefer, indulge in hobbies and getting a regular exercise habit and a healthy meal. Keep yourself open to encounter pleasant things and lots of happiness, it should help.
