    Home Remedies for Head Lice

Symptoms of head lice can include:
    • having an itchy scalp
    • seeing red bumps on your child's scalp and neck
    • seeing live lice moving around on your child's head
    • finding nits (lice eggs), which are tiny white oval shaped specks that are attached to the sides of hairs
If you are just seeing nits, but no live lice, then you may be able to simply wash her hair with a regular shampoo and then try to remove the nits using a nit comb. Keep in mind that live lice can sometimes be hard to find, so if you continue to find new nits, then your child does likely have an active lice infestation and does need further treatment.

If the 'white stuff' is simply dandruff and is on her scalp and not on the hair shafts, then she may not have head lice at all. Instead of lice treatments, you might try an medicated shampoo, like Selsun or Neutrogena T-gel, although a visit to your Pediatrician would be a good idea in this case.

    Head Lice Home Remedies

If you don't want to use a chemical on your child's head, the most effective treatment that doesn't involve using any products at all simply involves removing the nits and live lice with a lice comb and/or tweezers. This is the method that is advocated by The National Pediculosis Association. It can be time consuming to do this and you may have to repeat the procedure for several days to make sure you get them all, but this is likely the best thing to do. You still have to take the time to comb out all of the nits anyway even if you use an anti-lice shampoo, as these shampoos don't kill the eggs. If you don't, they will just hatch and you will have live lice again. Most other natural home remedies involve putting something on your child's scalp and hair to 'smother' the head lice. Popular choices include real mayonnaise, olive oil, and vaseline. These are usually left on overnight, often under a shower cap, and then washed out the next day. They can be very messy though and have not really been proven to work. Some experts believe that this method 'works' because you actually remove the nits and lice as you try to get this stuff out of the child's hair.

There are also herbal remedies to treat head lice, including products with tea tree oil and other essential oils. Because they are 'natural,' these are not regulated by the FDA, have not been proven to work, and should be used with caution and avoided in younger children.

Parents and pediatricians can also now to turn to Ulesfia (Benzyl Alcohol Lotion 5%) as a non-pesticide prescription treatment for head lice. Ulesfia can be applied to the hair of children over 6 months of age with head lice until it is saturated, washed off after 10 minutes, and then reapplied 7 days later. Unlike Nix, Rid and other head lice shampoos, Ulesfia is thought to work by blocking the louses respiratory spiracles, thereby suffocating them.

    Head Lice Treatments

If you do see live lice moving around on her head, then she needs to be treated. In addition to over-the-counter medicines, like Rid and Nix, and prescription medicines, such as Ovide, there are many natural home remedies that you could try. Keep in mind that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, Nix 'is currently the recommended treatment for head lice, with retreatment in 7 to 10 days if live lice are seen.'

    Remedies for Head Lice

Although natural lice remedies are extremely popular, home remedies to get rid of lice may not always be the best lice treatment option. The effectiveness of natural head lice treatments varies from person to person and there have been no scientific validations for any of the claims of the effectiveness of these head lice home treatments. Natural lice remedies may be used to treat mild lice infestations, but if there are no results within a few days, or if the infestation recurs then make sure you seek medical treatment. The problem of lice treatment also stems from the rapid reproductive cycle of lice. This basically implies that although the home remedies to get rid of lice may successfully get rid of them, eggs or nits that have already been laid will hatch to repopulate the area. This is why lice treatment is generally repeated within a period of four to five days or a week as the eggs hatch within this time.

Treating head lice with tea tree oil and olive oil treatments for head lice are quite popular. Some people also claim that the use of mayonnaise as a topical application helps control lice infestation problems.

Head lice home treatment with vinegar is probably one of the most popular of all lice treatment home remedies. For head lice problem wash your hair with vinegar. It will kill all the nits in two days. Apply coconut oil to your head after shampoo and condition. Add ten to fifteen drops of tea tree oil into shampoo bottle and use it daily. Rub listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice. Massage your head with mayonnaise and comb it after 2 hours. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head.

Keep in mind that the treatment for lice infestations goes beyond the treatment of the affected areas of the body. In addition to the use of natural head lice treatments or medicated products you need to take stringent measures to decontaminate the household and any objects and items of clothing that may be contaminated. While getting rid of head lice or lice on your body may not be tough it is very common for infestations to recur. Clothing and bed linen can be washed in hot water with detergents or left in airtight bags for over a week to kill off the lice and their eggs. Objects like combs and brushes, hair bands and clips should be soaked in hot water or medicated shampoo, or both, or they could simply be thrown away and replaced. Because of the ease with which lice are passed on it is important that every member of the household is treated simultaneously, whether or not the symptoms of lice infestation are present as these symptoms often become apparent much later, by which time the lice may have again been passed on.

Re: Home Remedies for Head Lice

Some more Home Remedies For Lice

Easy to prevent, but difficult to treat - good hygiene is the most effective prevention of head lice.

    • Avoid sharing personal items like combs, brushes, towels, pillows, hats, headwear, etc.
    • Avoid head to head contact with any person.
    • Trim your hair to a shorter length as lice can not find suitable environment in short hair.
    • Do a regular check in and around the nape of the neck, behind the ears and scalp, especially for children.
    • If one member of the family is infected with lice, treat all the members of the family at the same time to prevent lice spreading from one head to another.
    • To get rid of lice, you should get rid of all its nits or eggs. Nits are difficult to kill by any treatment. Since they attach themselves firmly on the hair shafts, they are also bit difficult to be pulled out. Vigorous brushing of your hair 2-3 times a day using a bristle hair brush will knock off most nits. Try using flea combs instead of lice combs for better results. Try some of these home based treatments to cure lice problem
    • Keshbeam Hair Oil is a unique formula compounded according to the ancient principles of Ayurveda. It is offered to people who suffer from hair fall, dandruff, itching scalp, premature graying and bald scalp conditions. This hair oil acts as a best conditioner. Encourages new growth by allowing oxygen to hair follicles.
    • Mix cup olive oil with 2-3 tbsp of tea tree oil. Rub into scalp and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash your hair to remove the oil. Then rinse your hair with vinegar as it loosens the holding properties of the eggs and nits on your hair. Wait for 10 mins and rinse with hot water. Repeat vinegar rinse twice. Comb your hair using lice or flea comb to remove any remaining nits.
    • Mix 4-5 drops of tea tree oil with your daily shampoo and use as usual.
    • Warm few tbsp of mayonnaise (depending on who is using it either a child or adult). Slather it on the scalp just like shampoo. Wear a shower cap and sit for 30 minutes. Then wash your hair with normal shampoo. Then use fine toothed comb to get the eggs and bugs out. The oils in the mayonnaise provide lubrication to the hair and scalp, eliminating the ability of the eggs to hold on to the hair shafts. The shower cap cuts off any air flow the eggs needed to remain alive.
    • Saturate your hair with olive oil and wear a shower cap with clip leaving it overnight. Brush out your hair using nit/flea/lice comb. Then wash your hair as usual with your shampoo and conditioner. Next take plain white vinegar and rinse your hair with it. Use warm water to remove vinegar. This dissolves the eggs. Repeat the vinegar rinse till needed.
    • Completely soak hair with olive oil and wrap it in towel for 1-2 hours. Rinse and wash as usual. Work through your hair with fine tooth comb to remove eggs and lice. Repeat in one week.
    • Mix any type of edible oil (vegetable, canola or olive) with vinegar in equal proportion. Add 18-20 drops of tea tree oil. Mix all the 3 ingredients well to get a creamy paste. Apply to damp hair. Massage well onto the scalp and comb through the ends of hair. Wrap a plastic bag around your head for 3 hours or more. Lice and nits will suffocate and slide off easily. Do this at least once a week.
    • Do not leave the young children unattended if you're covering their heads with plastic bags during any of the above home based treatment - as plastic bags can lead to suffocation.
