More than women, men suffer from hair lossand hair fall.

The most common being patchy hair loss, which is also referred to as Alopecia Areata, a condition in which the hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp (Wiki). Dr Swati Srivastava, dermatologist, Sketch Clinics, Mumbai shares different reasons that cause patchy hair loss in men.

Alopecia Areata: Is a common condition, probably autoimmune. It generally starts in 2nd or 3rd decade. The characteristic initial lesion is circumscribed totally to reveal a smooth bald patch. Exclamation hairs (broken hair) may be seen at the periphery of the patches. It also occurs on the scalp and the beard. It is a serious cosmetic problem and you may need to consult your dermatologist.

Ringworm: Also known as Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and needs antifungal treatment.

Trichotillomania: It is a form of hair loss caused by intentional or unintentional pulling out of the hair. A person suffering from this, needs counselling. This condition, generally affects kids.

Androgenetic Alopecia: This is a very common cause of baldness, particularly in men.

Sometimes the hair line starts receding back and patches of baldness occur in the front. Sometimes hair is lost from the vertex leaving the other areas intact. This is a hormonal problem. This may run in the family and needs to be treated as early as possible to prevent balding.

Hair can also be lost in patches due to infections or Lichen Planus or trauma. There are a lot of treatments widely available for hair loss.

Mesotherapy and stem cells: Injections given on the scalp to stimulate hair follicles.
    Intra lesional steroid injections.

Hair implants: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) are the most common types of hair implants.
