But sometimes, thoughts of their baby falling ill do occur in the minds of some couples.
Then they will have to make decision on the day of their baby's birth, to bank their newborn's umbillical cord blood or not.
Cord blood is the remnants of the blood that remains in the newborn's umbillical cord after birth.Umbillical cord is the cord like structure that connects the foetus to the placenta.
Cord blood is similar to bone marrow an invaluable source of a type of stem cell that can be used for variety of medical treatments.

    Re: umbilical cord banking

The blood forming stemcells are capable of developing into 3 types of mature blood cells present in the human blood. They are red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Also cord blood stem cells may give rise to other cell types in the body.
The potential of cord-blood stem cells was discovered in the '70s and are being used nowadays to treat many life-threatening diseases.

The inherited genetic diseases that can be treated with bone marrow transplants could be treated by a child's cordblood stemcells. And also for leukemia and blood disorders.

Also cord blood stem cells are being researched for regernerative medicine in experimental treatments for brain injury, juvenile diabetes. And also researches show good results in heart and neurological diseases.

These are the reasons for saving and banking the cord stem cells of new born babies.

The collection of the umbillical cord blood is done shortly after birth , both in normal and caesarean deliveries.
This requires a specific-kit which has to be ordered in advance. The more umbillical cord blood is collected , more will be the stem cells.

Once it is collected, it is stored in bags or syringes and sent to the cord blood bank. There the sample will be given a unique identifying number. Then the stem cells are seperated from the blood and will be stored in liquid nitrogen.
When the need arises this can be used either by the donor or any other needy.
Since the research started only in 70s the maximum storage time is not yet determined.

The expense may range approximately from 1 lakh as a one time payment or more in case of EMI.
This is like an Insurance policy which one may never use but can stay secure and comfort.
