'Indians three times more prone to cardiac arrest than Americans'

Indians are three times more prone to cardiac arrest than Americans owing primarily to poor lifestyle, eating habits and genetic reasons, medical experts have said.

While on an average the Americans suffer from cardiac arrest in their 50s, Indians get it in their 40s and the prime reason behind it is lifestyle and food consumption, they said here on Sunday.

Genetically also the disease is likely to be passed down Indian families three times more than American families.

"The cardiac problem has emerged the number one killer in India which has left the rest of the world behind," said Pawan Sharma, an eminent cardiologist, at a conference on cardiac death hosted by the Heart Care Centre here.

He said better health care and advances in medical sciences in the developed countries had helped curb the death rate ascribable to heart conditions.

Several speakers at the conference said the heart problems in India were best tackled through widespread awareness campaigns focussed on prevention and lifestyle changes rather than relying on India's inadequate medical resources.

Sanjay Tyagi, Director of the city-based Govind Ballabh Pant hospital, said: "It's a myth that anyone developing chest pain and suspecting an impending cardiac attack should be immediately administered sorbitrate before medical care could be reached for management and treatment of the condition".

There was a consensus that suspected case should first be put on disprin as every instance of chest pain was not necessarily heart attack and starting treatment on just having the pain was not advisable, he said.

Blocking fat-transporting protein may slow ageing

A naturally occurring protein that transports fats around the body also hinders essential functions in cells that increase life span, scientists have found, suggesting that blocking the protein in humans may prevent age-related diseases.

When the scientists genetically blocked production of worms' yolk lipoprotein, called vitellogenin (VIT), the nematodes lived up to 40 per cent longer, researchers said.

Mice, humans and other mammals produce a protein called apolipoprotein B (apoB), and therapies have been developed to reduce apoB to prevent cardiovascular disease.

The research suggests that there might be a whole other benefit to reducing apoB. Data from the nematodes indicate that apoB's evolutionary cousin VIT prevents long life span by impairing the ability of cells to use and remodel fats for healthier purposes.

"That protein, which has an ortholog in humans, is a major decider of what happens to fat inside intestinal cells," said senior author Louis Lapierre, from the Brown University.

"If you reduce the production of these lipoproteins you allow the fat to be reused in different ways," said Lapierre.

Lipophagy is the process of breaking down large quantities of built-up fats and reusing them for other purposes. The study showed that the longevity benefits associated with increased lipophagy are hindered by too much VIT.

Experiments showed that the life span benefits of blocking VIT did not occur if autophagy was blocked in other ways.

They also showed that VIT hinders a related process called lysosomal lipolysis, the endpoint of lipophagy which catalyses fat breakdown.

In mice, researchers connected this effect to another well-known model of increased longevity - dietary restriction.

Many studies have shown that animals that eat less live longer. Researchers showed that calorie-restricted mice produced less apoB.

In nematodes, the purpose of VIT is thought primarily to involve the transport of fats from the intestine to the reproductive system to nourish eggs and to aid reproduction.

Similarly in mammals, a purpose of apoB is to transfer fats away from the intestine and liver toward other tissues where they can either be used or stored, Lapierre said.

"Since we see in the worm that we can extend life span by silencing this protein, we reason that it could be a promising strategy to prevent age-related disease in humans," Lapierre said.

The study found that at least in nematodes, keeping fats in the intestine allows cells to carry out processes that are linked to longer life span.

The study was published in the journal Autophagy.

Seaweed capsule to help diabetics lead a needle-free life

Scientists have developed a capsule made from seaweed extract or preserving insulin-producing pancreatic cells, offering hope to diabetics to lead a needle-free life.

Patients with type 1 diabetes require daily insulin injections. Pancreatic islet transplantation is an effective treatment that can dramatically reduce daily jabs or even eliminate dependence on external insulin, researchers said.

So far only human islets can be transplanted and their supply is low.Cryopreservation is the method commonly used for the islet preservation and transportation. However, the freezing process poses a challenge. As the cells are cooled, water in and around them freezes. Ice crystals have sharp edges that can pierce membranes and compromise cell viability .

Researchers led by Amy Shen in Japan developed a cryopreservation method that helps to protect pancreatic islets from ice damage.

The technique employs a droplet microfluidic device to encapsulate pancreatic islets in hydrogel made of alginate, a natural polymer extracted rom seaweed. These capsules have a unique microstructure -a porous network and considerable amount of non-freezable water, which does not form ice due to the strong association between water molecules and the hydrogel networks.

Islet encapsulation reduces the risk of rejection of transplanted cells by the recipient. The hydrogel capsule allows small molecules, like nutrients and islet secretions, to pass through the membrane, but prevents direct contact between implanted islets and host cells.

Encapsulation also may prevent an attack on transplants by the autoimmune response that destroyed the patient's own islets in the first place.

Know why eating saunf, gulkand or elaichi after meal is good for you!

It is a common fact that most people tend to eat more when the food is just too delicious. But, overindulgence in food can take your health for a toss and may lead to indigestion

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, occurs when the digestive juices in the stomach are not secreted properly and as a result causes discomfort

Always being dependent on medicines can harm your system. It is advisable to opt for natural home remedies that aid digestion:

    Gulkand:
A good reason to eat gulkand is that it provides relief from acidity as it has cooling properties.

    Saunf:
Helps cool the lining of the stomach. Due to its anti-ulcer properties, it aids in digestion and relieves constipation.

    Elaichi:
Chewing elaichi stimulates digestion and relieve stomach spasms. It also soothes the inner lining of the stomach helping it ward off the effects of excess acid produced in the stomach.

14 gram almonds daily can boost your health

Eating a moderate amount of almonds daily can enrich the diets of adults and young children, says a new study.

"Almonds are a good source of plant protein -- essential fatty acids, vitamin E and magnesium," said one of the researchers Alyssa Burns from University of Florida in the US.

For the 14-week study, the scientists gave almonds daily to 29 pairs of parents and children. Most of the adults were mothers with an average age of 35, while their children were between three and six years of age.

The children were encouraged to consume 14 grams of almond butter daily and parents were given 14 grams of almonds per day.

An online dietary recall was used to find out what adults had eaten and how much. That way, researchers could measure diet quality.

The scientists based their conclusions about improved dietary intake on participants' scores on the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a tool used to measure diet quality and adherence to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The results indicated that when parents and children were eating almonds, their HEI increased for total protein foods, seafood and plant proteins and fatty acids, while they ate fewer empty calories.

For all components, a higher score indicates higher diet quality. When parents and children ate almonds, their HEI score increased from 53.7 to 61.4.

Parents and children consumed more vitamin E and magnesium when eating almonds, Burns noted.

The study was published in the journal Nutrition Research.

    Overeating can cause depression, beware!

In a recent study, it has been found that chronic overeating and stress are tied to an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

The researchers from Yale University report that the anesthetic ketamine reverses depression-like symptoms in rats which are fed a high-fat diet in a similar way it combats depression and synaptic damage of chronic stress in people.

Senior author Ronald Duman said that the effects of a high-fat diet overlap with those of chronic stress and could also be a contributing factor in depression as well as metabolic disorders such as Type 2 diabetes.

In the research scientists have shown that ketamine, also known as Special K and abused as a recreational drug, can quickly and dramatically reduce symptoms of chronic depression in patients, who are resistant to typical antidepressant agents.

They also found that a single low dose of ketamine reversed those symptoms quickly, and reversed the disruption of mTORC signaling pathways.

The research is published in the Journal, 'Neuropharmacology.'

Speed up your metabolism with these five simple hacks!

: Becoming fitter and slimmer is everyone's in-built desire in the present days where junk food and fast food are a big rage and our metabolism is taking the slow road.

Many people complain that despite a significant amount of workout and a healthy diet, they are not able to maintain a slim and fit body.

But in the race to become more toned, we forget that our lifestyle choices have a lot to do with our metabolism.

Time for a few simple hacks to get that metabolism up and running, we think! Look no further! Mentioned below are such simple and effective hacks:

    1. Water breaks:
One of the simplest and most effective ways to spur your metabolism is drinking water before every meal. Normally, two glasses of water before every meal is good enough to kickstart your metabolism in a significant way. However, restrain from drinking water after or in between meals. That will just cause your body to bloat.

    2. Green tea:
Green tea is a very good source of antioxidants, especially catechins, which really kick starts your metabolism. A cup of green tea without any sugar fires up your metabolism causing your daily calorie burns to increase by 100 calories.

    3. Walk the talk:
Literally! Since many people spend a lot of their time everyday talking on the phone, the best thing is to stand or walk while answering your calls. If you walk as you talk, you can burn about 20% extra calories than what you burn while standing. So, make sure every time your phone rings you take a small stroll or at least stand while you attend the call.

    4. Lentil's the way:
An iron deficiency negatively impacts your body's capacity to burn calories. Lentils are a good source of iron as about 355 of your daily iron needs can be provided by them. Thus, having lentils can help you keep your your iron levels at optimum, helping your body function more effectively and burn calories faster.

    5. Increase probiotic consumption:
Food products like yogurt and pickles, which are high in the healthy bacteria – probiotics, are again a good way to set your metabolism off and help you in burning a few extra calories.
