Beet Root Health Benefits
Beet root health benefits have been known for ages and these mostly center around their positive effects on blood circulation.
The beet (beta vulgaris) is biennial, sometimes perennial plant possessing leafy stems that grow up to 1 to 2 meters tall. It has heart-shaped leaves. Its flowers are produced in spikes, with each flower measuring about 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter, and have five petals.
The beet root is one of the numerous cultivated varieties of the beet plant or beta vulgaris. Beet roots are round, usually bright red colored vegetables possessing edible, leafy green tops. Beet roots may also come in colors ranging from yellow to white. The type of beet root commonly grown for human consumption is the table beet.
When this vegetable is cooked, it has a sweet flavor and has a tender-crisp texture. Beets are said to contain the highest sugar content of all vegetables and are becoming popularly used as a sweetening substitute. Beet juice and beet root powder are often used as flavoring agent to carrot, celery, and other vegetable juices. Because of its usually bright red color, beet root is also used to color a variety of foods.
Beet root is also eaten as part of salad dishes. It can also be boiled and then pickled. In Eastern Europe, beet soup is a popular dish. It can also be peeled,
steamed, and then eaten warm with butter as a delicacy.
