    Health Tip of the Day!!-blackeyedpeas1-620x360.jpg

Black Eyed Peas - One half cup of black eyed beans or 83.5g contains about 286cal, 19.91g Proteins, 49.80g carbohydrates, 1.73g fats. Other micronutrients are calcium 71mg, iron 8.31mg, magnesium 278mg, phosphorus 366mg and sodium is 48mg.

The vitamin A in black-eyed peas comes in the form of beta-carotene. This gives you two health benefits because beta-carotene can be converted into the form of vitamin A needed for vision and the immune system, but it also functions as an antioxidant.

Being a starch, the black pea is extremely high in protein, a critical component of maintaining your body's energy and keeping you healthy and happy. The pea is also extremely low in fat. Protein energy is leaps and bounds better then fat energy, as protein stores as a short term energy source,as opposed to fat energy, which gives you energy for the long haul. For this reason, black eyed peas make a great afternoon snack to get you through the work day.

Besides keeping you energized, black eyed peas are made up of a soluble fiber, as well as being insoluble in some parts. This brings a twofold bonus to your health. The soluble fiber helps lower your overall cholesterol level, breaking down fat globules in your blood stream, also decreasing your blood pressure. In turn, insoluble fibers from the pea go to long lengths to strengthen the human intestine tract, preventing colon cancer and constipation.

One cup of black-eyed peas provides 52 percent of the recommended daily intake of folate. Folate has the vital role of helping to create genetic material and build cells. Consuming an adequate amount of folate is essential during periods of growth, from pregnancy through adolescence. Women who get enough folate before becoming pregnant, and during the early months of pregnancy, lower the risk of birth defects of the spinal cord and brain.

Saffron - Saffron contains medicinal substances such as vitamin B 2; crocin, a yellow flavonoid; picrocrocin, a bitter glycoside, and safranal, a volatile, aromatic compound. Saffron is very much effective in lowering the blood cholesterol level and triglycerides among the heart patients. Saffron was even used in ancient times to increase blood circulation and relieve stomach aches and kidney stones.

This particular spice is also a good source of minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, selenium and zinc. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help in controlling the heart rate and blood pressure. On the other hand, manganese and copper are used as co-factors for antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase by the body. Iron also plays a role in increasing the count of red blood cells in the body.

Saffron contains carotenoids, which helps in increasing the oxygen diffusivity in the plasma and other liquids. It also helps in improving pulmonary oxygenation. The presence of carotenoids in saffron also helps to curb skin tumors and improve arthritis.

The different active components in saffron bring about a positive effect on people with neuro degenerative disorders and memory impairment. Saffron, when rubbed or massaged on the gums, helps in reducing soreness and inflammation of the mouth and tongue.

It is believed that saffron is capable of treating cancer, as it contains anti-cancer properties. However, the effectiveness of saffron in treating cancer is still under research.Saffron is also believed to be as effective as Prozac in treating mild and moderate depression.

    Health Tip of the Day!!-raspberries.jpg

Raspberries - Delicious raspberries are low in calories and saturated fats but are rich source of dietary fiber and antioxidants. 100 g berries contain just 52 calories but provide 6.5 g of fiber (16% of daily recommended intake).

They are a good source of phytonutrients and antioxidants, including ellagic acid, a tannin that helps prevent cell damage from free radicals and slows tumor growth.

Its seed oil has a natural sun protection factor. It contains high amounts of polyphenolic compounds known for their anti-cancer properties. It contains strong antioxidants such as Vitamin C, quercetin and gallic acid.

Anthocyanins, the flavonoids that give red raspberries their color, contribute to fresh and frozen berries’ high antioxidant level. There are notably fewer anthocyanins in processed raspberry products, including jams. (Freezing raspberries doesn’t significantly affect their antioxidant properties, but it does reduce their plentiful vitamin C by half.)

Anthocyanins also help prohibit too much growth of certain bacteria and fungi in the body, like Candida albicans, which can contribute to irritable bowel syndrome and vaginal infections.

Raspberries are an excellent source of fiber, and because they rank low on the glycemic index, they’re a good fruit option for those managing their blood-sugar levels.

They are rich in B-complex group of vitamins and vitamin K. The berries contain very good amounts of vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid. These vitamins are function as co-factors and help body in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats.
