    Main Function of Vitamin B1
    Vitamin B1's main function is energy metabolism. The calories that we consume in a day are metabolized in our body to produce energy. This metabolism rate is different in different people.

    In some cases, this metabolism rate is so high that a person who has a very rich and fatty diet doesn't get any fat at all. On the other hand, some people who don't eat much are still obese. So, vitamin B1 is recommended to improve body's metabolism and its deficiency may cause obesity.


    RDA of Vitamin B1
    Recommended daily allowance of vitamin B1 is 1.2 mg in males and 1.1 mg in females. Smoking, alcohol, contraceptive pill and a diet high in sugar will increase requirements of B1.


    Deficiency of Vitamin B1
    Deficiency of this vitamin can cause a disease named 'beriberi'.


    Degradation of Vitamin B1
    Vitamin B1 is easily lost by heat and cooking water.


    Food Sources of Vitamin B1
    The main food sources of B1 are whole grains, green peas, fresh fruits and vegetables, milk.

    Sunflower seeds, dried (1/4 cup 36 gm) 0.82 mg of Thiamine
    Whole wheat bread (2 slices 92 gm) 0.3 mg of Thiamine


    Note: A folic acid deficiency and eating large quantity of raw fish can discourage Thiamine metabolism.
