    Ginger –8

    HAIR BENEFITS:

Ginger has been used in hair treatment for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine which relies upon the herbs for treatment of ailments.

Ginger oil is particularly beneficial in this regard to stimulate hair growth. Thus, ginger is beneficial for your hair in the following ways.

    Hair Growth:

Ginger increases scalp circulation resulting in the flow of blood to the scalp. Thus it stimulates the hair follicles and encourages growth. The fatty acids present in ginger are beneficial for thin hair.

A hair mask can be made by grating 1 tablespoon of ginger root in a small bowl and adding 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil to it.

Massage the scalp with this mixture in circular motions and leave for 30 minutes or longer. Rinse off and shampoo as usual. This will combat hair loss and thinning hair as well as stimulate hair growth.

    Dry and Brittle Hair:

Ginger is great for dry and brittle hair as it contains vitamins, zinc and phosphorus which impart sheen to the hair.

    Hair Loss:

Ginger root is a great remedy for hair loss. Ginger extracts make the hair stronger and pleasant smelling.

    Split Ends:

Split ends are caused when the hair follicles get damaged due to exposure to pollutants and excessive heat. Ginger extracts can be used in the treatment of damaged hair follicles.

    Dandruff:

Dandruff is one of the most common scalp problems. Ginger has antiseptic properties which can help to get rid of dandruff. Ginger oil is an effective remedy to combat dandruff naturally.

Mix 2 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger with 3 tablespoon of sesame or olive oil and add a dash of lemon juice to the mixture. Massage the scalp with it and rinse off after 15 to 30 minutes. This should be done thrice a week to get a dandruff free scalp.

    Ginger – 10

    Gingerol:

Gingerol is yellow pungent oil in ginger that is responsible for imparting its intense flavor. Its chemical structure is similar to that of capsaicin, the compound that gives hot peppers their spicy flavor. Gingerol possesses anti-inflammatory properties and is a blood sugar modulator. Moreover, it regulates two important enzymes that manage type-2 diabetes and inhibits cyclooxygenase, enzyme that promotes inflammation.

    Shogaol:

It is a phenolic compound that has been found to possess substantial anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, making it effective against breast cancer. They have greater anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects than gingerol, resulting in prevention of lung and colon cancers.

    Vitamins and Minerals:

Vitamin B6 is also effective in reducing inflammation. A 1 oz. serving of ginger provides about 2.5 % of the recommended daily value (DV) of vitamin B6. Fresh ginger has a higher content of vitamin B6 than dried or sugar cured ginger as drying or adding sugar can destroy vitamin B6.

Ginger also contains modest amounts of important minerals. An ounce of ginger provides about 2 to 3% of the recommended DV of magnesium, potassium, copper and manganese.

Potassium is vital for maintaining electrolyte balance in body fluids, magnesium aids in muscle relaxation, copper manages blood sugar and bone metabolism, and manganese is a component of antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase.

    Special precautions & warnings

Ginger root, the common Asian spice, is also used medicinally to treat many kinds of stomach complaints, such as morning sickness, upset stomach and nausea. It is sometimes used to treat respiratory infections and other diseases. Many of these uses are unproven and ginger does pose certain risks, particularly when eating in large quantities.

    Breast-Feeding:

Not enough is known about the safety of using ginger during breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and don’t use it.

    Bleeding Disorders:

Taking ginger might increase the risk of bleeding.

    Diabetes:

Ginger might lower the blood sugar. As a result, the diabetes medications might need to be adjusted by the healthcare provider.

Eating ginger could reduce the blood sugar levels. Diabetics should monitor blood sugar after a meal that contains ginger root to ensure their levels do not drop too low.

If one notice a drop and begin to feel weak, lightheaded or experience other signs of low blood sugar, drink a glass of juice or consume something sweet to raise levels. If they do not improve, seek medical attention immediately.

Diabetics that consistently consume ginger root should talk with their
doctor about adjusting medications to reduce the likelihood of drops in blood sugar levels.

    Digestive Problems

Ginger rarely causes side effects but if taken in large doses can cause heartburn, diarrhoea, mouth irritation, and belching, upset stomach, a bad taste in the mouth, bloating, gas and nausea.

One may be able to reduce some of these side effects by using supplements in capsule form. One who have a history of ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal blockage, should not eat large quantities of fresh ginger.

    Heart conditions:

High doses of ginger might worsen some heart conditions.

    Pregnancy
    :

Using ginger during pregnancy is controversial. There is some concern that ginger might affect fetal sex hormones.

Studies in pregnant women suggest that ginger can be used safely for morning sickness without harm to the baby.

Before using ginger during pregnancy it is better to take the advice of the concerned doctor.

Though ginger is sometimes used to treat morning sickness, eating more than 1 g a day may cause birth defects and other problems.

Large doses of ginger might affect the baby’s sex hormones or cause miscarriage or bleeding.

But other research studies suggest that ginger does not harm the baby and the risk of birth defects in women using ginger does not appear to be higher than normal.

Always consult a doctor before taking ginger if pregnant.
