hi friends, this is my second one and am in 24 weeks pregnent.getting shortness of breathing....pls help

Congrats for your pregnancy and welcome to Penmai.....suvish

Yes, few ladies experience this kind of short breath.
    Nothing to worry about this.

    Since your uterus may
hit the diaphragm, and due to the increase in progesterone, this happens.

    This may reduc
e, once the child is nearing your pelvis, that is while nearing your due date.

For this, you may be little slow, while doing your activities.

While sitting, sit straight and push your shoulders back, so that you will feel relieved with your lungs in the forward position.

And while sleeping, you may keep two pillows for your head, so that you will feel relieved.

We Pray for your safe delivery.

    Uma,

    Welcome.

Actually this gestational diabetes comes mainly due to hereditary. It could generally be not avoided.

But, when any of your family (paternal or maternal) members have this, you can be little cautious while you are pregnant.

The starch intake can be reduced by little. You can avoid sugary items.

You can take 6 small meals in a day, instead of having 3 large meals.

You can take all kinds of fruits, but avoid fruit juices.

Instead of white rice, you can take little of white rice, but rely more on brown rice.

You can be cautious with starchy vegetables like potato , etc.

By following these, you can avoid gestational diabetes, to a certain extent, when you first get confirmed with your pregnancy.

If you happen to have gestational diabetes, you should take only INSULIN and never take any tablets for diabetes.

Usually, this gesttional diabetes, gets rid off after delivery. But, you may be careful later in life, for its non-recurrence.

Re: November 2013 Due Date Buddies - Meet Here!!!

Dear friends, Feeling shortness of breath while the pregnancy advances is a common feature. You need more oxygen during pregnancy and your body adopts to meet this increase in need for oxygen in several ways. An increase in harmones, particularly progesterone, directly affects your lungs and stimulates the respiratory center in your brain. And while the number of breaths you take per minute actually changes very little during pregnancy, the amount of air you inhale and exhale with each breath increases significantly.
Later in pregnancy, as your growing uterus puts pressure on your diaphragm, your breathing might feel more labored - especially if you are carrying your baby high are carrying multiples, or excessive amniotic fluid. You may get some relief a weeks before you're due, especially if it's your first pregnancy. This is when some women experience lightening (the baby dropping into the pelvis)

Nothing to worry about this feeling. This feeling is usually harmless and normal.
But it is good idea to take things a bit more slowly and remember not to push yourself too hard when being active. Sit up straight and keep your shoulders, especially when sitting, to give your lungs as much room to expand and as possible. When you are in bed at night, propping yourself up a bit with a few extra pillows might give you some relief. Once you give birth, your breathing will soon go back to feeling like it did before you were pregnant.
Please note that the feeling of short breath is not always harmless. For example, if you get a respiratory illness such as asthma or pneumonia, it can be serious when you are pregnant. This why it is important to get consultation from your doctor.
Also, because of changes in blood clotting during pregnancy, you're more at risk for a pulmonary embolism ( a blood clot that goes to your lungs). This very rare but very serious. Shortness of breath that comes on suddenly or becomes severe could be a sign of a serious medical problem. Seek medical help immediately.

Always watch for following symptoms and seek doctor's help immediately:
    Worsening Aasthma
    Rapid breathing
Rapid pulse, heart palpitations or faintness
Chest pain or pain when you breathe
A blue tinge around your lips, fingers, or toes, or if you look pale
A sense of apprehension that you're not getting enough oxygen
A persistent cough, a cough along with fever or chills, or coughing blood.

Dear Uma, to avoid diabetic conditions during pregnancy, you have to avoid any processed sugar and simple carbohydrates like products made with white flour, pasta, white rice etc., Eat lots of fresh vegetables and stay away from fruit juices. Avoid sweets like cookies, candy, pastries etc., Eat apple or pear. Eat lot of vegetables, tomatoes, avocados, greens etc. Always consult your doctor and she will suggest you to keep your sugar level in control. Nothing to worry.

    Keep three things in mind:
    1. Eat healthy food : High Fiber foods and low in fat foods are very much essential. Fresh vegetables and whole grains is the must .

    2. Keep yourself active: Aim for 30 minutes moderate exercise during pregnancy with the advise from your doctor is very much helpful. Take brisk walk daily. If 30 minutes work out is not possible in single stretch, you can get it split into three sessions in a day as per your available time.
    3. Always have regular consultations with your doctor according to her advise do the tests and seek her advise always.

    All the best. thank you

regarding the Gestational Diabetes, my share of thoughts:

Heredity- that makes your probability more, but does not mean that you will get diabetes. But, if you get diabetes during preg, more likely you will get later age of your life.
Carbs - Avoid high carb foods as much as possible. that includes idli, dosa, pasta, maida and ofcourse white rice too.
Proteins - Take lots of proteins. Proteins are high in chicken, chick peas, egg and many of lentils.
Eat more often less quantity compared to less often more quantity.
Do regular exercise atleast take a walk.
we can take fruit juices, but freshly made juice with no more additives def not sugar or any other sweetener.

    Best Wishes
