This is an advanced test and is given to pregnant women who have had abnormal levels of blood sugar in their glucose screening test. This test can take about a good chunk of the day—almost half a day. So ensure that you budget time for this. Also, take someone with you or take a good book to keep you entertained and pepped up.Here is how this test is conducted:
  • You will be asked to fast for about 12 hours (check the time with your doctor. Different labs have different times) before attending a special lab where the test will be carried out.
  • When you arrive, a nurse will take a blood sample from you. This is used to measure the level of sugar in your blood when you have been fasting and is called a baseline test.
  • Then you will be asked to drink a sweet glucose drink (more concentrated than what you drank for the glucose screening test)
  • And your blood will be tested again once every 3 hours.
If you do not test positive for any of the 3 sample tests, then you are fine and not diagnosed with gestational diabetes. These 3 blood samples will be tested and compared to your baseline blood sample. If you test positive (have abnormal blood sugar) for only 1 test then, you will be asked to make diet changes and will be tested again. If you test positive for 2 out of the 3 tests, you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes and the doctor will start treating you for it.
