    Brain Development Activities for Babies

Your baby's brain grows faster in the 1-3 years of life than it will in later years, according to the website Sixty Second Parent. Everything experiences affects brain development, even basic activities such as talking to him/her or letting him/her play with ordinary objects providing activities that are healthy and stimulating will provide a nurturing environment in which your baby's brain can develop.

    Holding and Mouthing Objects

You can help your baby hold objects of different shapes and texture, from plastic toys to rolled-up socks. Let him/her put the objects in his mouth when it's safe to do so.

    Snuggling and Holding

Snuggle with your child, touch and hold him frequently. The brains of babies who are deprived of touching develop more slowly than the brains of those who are held and touched frequently. Carry babies in a sling so they are close to your body and easy to stroke, and let them sit on your lap when they are older.

    Speaking and Singing

Speak often to your child by asking questions. Sing songs to your child. According to parenting website Kids Growth, children whose parents frequently speak to them learn up to 200 more words by the age of 2 than children whose parents don't do so. Talk about simple, everyday actions, explaining, for instance, how you have to open the door before you can walk through it. Let your baby "talk," and encourage conversation by repeating back the sounds he makes. Speak to him

    Exercise Essential for Brain Health

According to a new study both aerobic exercise and strength training are important to cognitive health throughout life. Researchers reviewed the results of more than 100 recent human and animal studies and concluded that exercise is one of the most important ways to improve brain function from early childhood into late adulthood.

For kids and children, aerobic exercise is important in forming cognitive abilities that are important throughout life. Physical inactivity is associated with poorer academic performance and results on standard neuropsychological tests. Exercise programs improve memory, attention and decision making, according to the researchers. Physical activity benefits executive functions, including multi -tasking, planning and inhibition, and also increases the volume of brain structures important for memory. These also suggest high-intensity and high-load training which improve memory in older adults

Lunchbox foods to boost kids IQ brain power

Do you want your kids to be a master in sports and arts? Do you want your kids to have lot of fun ? Do you want your kids to be brilliant?Do you want your kids to eat healthy diet?

To boost the brain power some foods and nutrients that science shows have an edge for keeping kids sharp and fuelled for the day.IQ have got bases covered some of these brain-boosting foods every day. Omega-3-Rich Foods IQ DHA and EPA, two types of omega-3 fatty acids, are important for brain development and are associated with lower risk of depression and better mood, the expression of emotion and concentration.

    Here are some brainy foods!!!

    Walnuts

Healthy Carbohydrates: Studies show that fuelling the brain with breakfast is important for thinking, acting and learning. Children who are undernourished perform poorly on cognitive tasks. Research shows that fuelling your kids with slower-burning carbohydrates (also called low-glycemic-index foods) like oatmeal, instead of faster-burning, or high-glycemic-index, breakfast foods (like sugary cereals) helps them maintain their concentration and attention throughout the morning.

Iron-Rich Foods: Research shows that being even mildly iron-deficient affects learning, memory and attention. (About 10 percent of young women are anaemic because of their monthly loss of iron-rich blood.) Luckily, restoring iron levels to normal also restores cognitive function. Here are some foods that are good sources of iron. Beans Dark leafy greens (kale, chard, spinach) Meat Chicken or turkey Fish Soy (tofu, edamame/soybeans)

    Water and water-filled foods

Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp, your mood stable and your motivation intact. When youΓre well-hydrated, you can think through a problem more easily. Researchers hypothesize that not having enough water could reduce oxygen flow to the brain or temporarily shrink neuronsΓor being thirsty could simply distract you.

Daily water needs for kids range by age: kids 1-3 years need 44 ounces a day, 4-8 years need about 57 ounces, boys 9-13 years need 81 ounces, girls 9-13 years need 71 ounces, boys 14-18 need 111 ounces and girls 14-18 need 77 ounces of fluid a day.

About 20 percent of our fluid intake comes from food. In addition to offering water with meals, remember that about 20 percent of our fluid intake comes from food. Cucumbers Watermelon Strawberries Salad greens

What is healthy for your childΓǪ.

Nutrition for children is a very important aspect as we are looking at the development and growth of children. A well balanced diet should have all the required nutrients in right proportions.A parent will always have in his/her mind that their child should be eating healthy. Now how can you as a parent plan your childΓs diet? These are the following major nutrients that you need to include in the diet-

    Carbohydrates

They are very important as they provide the major source of energy as calories. Foods from this group provide starch or complex carbohydrates for energy and also provide vitamins, minerals and mainly fiber. Include whole grain cereals like brown rice, whole wheat products, oats, ragi, jowar, bajra etc. Idli, dosa, chapatti, poha, upma, mueseli etc should be included in your childΓs diet. Avoid refined cereals like cornflakes and other breakfast cereals which contain high sugar content and bad for the teeth and also for weight control.

    Proteins

Proteins are the building blocks of our body. Hence a child will need enough protien for rapid growth. Protein is also needed for good hair, skin, nails etc. Majorly, good quality protein comes from milk and milk products like yogurt, buttermilk, cheese and cottage cheese or paneer and also from fish, chicken, eggs etc. Include atleast one serving from fish, eggs, lean meats etc and 2-3 servings from milk and milk products. Cheese can be a whole snack by it self rather than in a burger or on a pizza.

Proteins also come from vegetarian sources such as nuts and seeds, beans and legumes. These are the protein sources high in fiber and also in various vitamins and minerals. Including a protein source in every meal is very important. Avoid high fat milk sources such as ice cream, pastries as they are high in fat and sugar.

    Vitamins and minerals(Fruits and vegetables)

The fruits and vegetable food group is very essential as they are the richest sources of vitamins and minerals. They provide major vitamins such as Vitamin A,C and K and also minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium etc which are all required various organ functions and also for teeth and bone health.A variety in the diet provides a variety of this group. The major minerals needed at this phase are calcium, iron etc and vitamins such as Vitamin A for eye sight, growth, Vitamin C for immunity, Vitamin D for healthy bones and Vitamin E for brain development etc. They also provide fiber, serve as healthy snacks and improve the immunity by ten fold. Include this food group in every meal for better health.

Fats- Good fats are very essential for the child for both energy levels as well as for brain development. Fat content should come from good fats such as oils, seeds and nuts. Saturated fat which come from whole milk products, cheese should be given in limited quantities. Fats such as hydrogenated fats coming from all confectionery items such as biscuits, cakes and also the hydrogenated fats from chips and french fries are not good fats. Water- Water is the elixir of life.

A child should be well hydrated always. You should encourage your child to drink enough water during the day, especially after rigorous play. Try to cut down sugar, excess of salt, junk food such as Maggie noodles, chips, soft drinks etc. More information on junk food will be posted in the coming week. If this simple fundamentals of a diet are followed, then your child is on the path to better health.
