Healthy Teeth For Kids - Dental Care!!

Maintaining a good dental hygiene is of utmost important in order to prevent cavities and ensure healthy teeth for kids. Though everyone is well aware of the importance of early visits to the dentist yet the rate of toddlers suffering from cavities is increasing at a pretty fast pace.

According to a Study,, since the last couple of years,
the rate of cavities among teens have been decreasing and that of toddlers are increasing. The basics of dental care, that all of us are aware of, are not just enough to take proper care of the teeth.

And when it comes to taking care of your baby's teeth, then there are some more important things that you must take care of. Following are some of the things that you must follow specifically...

    1) Make sure to clean the gum of your baby before his first teeth protrudes out. Use a soft bristle to brush your baby's teeth twice a day.
    2) Till he is 2 years of age make sure not to use any fluoride toothpaste. However, you can switch to a fluoride toothpaste once he is 2 years of age.
    3) Get your child's teeth brushed properly especially before going to bed.
    4) Make sure to visit your dentist every 6 months regularly. Help your child to floss his teeth regularly to prevent cavities.
    5) In order to reduce the risk of cavities, you can consider dental sealants for your baby's permanent molar.

It is just not right to ignore the health of your baby's teeth. And moreover, good dental habits that you teach them during this age will last a lifetime. Poor dental habits can lead to formation of cavities.

Other than the poor dental hygiene, there are also other factors that could lead to the formation of cavities, Eating sticky snacks, lack of fluoride, etc. Take Care!!

Re: Healthy Teeth For Kids - Dental Care!!

Karti , very useful info on kids dental health ......Thank you ma...

Dental advice for children as given in UK

Children up to three years of age should use toothpaste with a fluoride level of at least 1,000ppm (parts per million).
After three years of age, children should use toothpaste with a fluoride level of 1,350-1,500ppm. The level of fluoride can be found on the pack.
Children should be supervised when brushing their teeth until about seven years of age.
The amount of toothpaste your child uses is important. Up to the age of three, a smear of toothpaste is sufficient, and from age three to six, a pea-sized amount is recommended.
Encourage your child to spit the toothpaste out after brushing their teeth rather than swallowing it.

    How does fluoride protect teeth?

Fluoride disrupts the process of tooth decay by:
changing the structure of developing enamel, making it more resistant to acid attack – these structural changes occur if a child consumes fluoride during the period when enamel develops (mainly up to seven years of age)
encouraging better quality enamel to form that's more resistant to acid attack
reducing plaque bacteria’s ability to produce acid, which is the cause of tooth decay....

Karti , this above advice on use of fluoridated tooth paste is followed in UK ......

THE REASON I HAVE POINTED IT IS FLUORIDE IS GOOD FOR TEETH IF USED IN A CERTAIN CONCENTRATION.....AND WHETHER TO USE FLUORIDATED PASTE OR NOT DEPENDS ON WHETHER THE WATER HAS A HIGH CONTENT OF FLUORIDE OR NOT ......

Also americans do not recommend fluoridated paste ( In america certain states have a high concentration of fluoride in ground water )but long term study has shown that fluoridated pastes have reduced decay in teeth ...... so it is a good topic to discuss with a dentist esp before using /not using fluoridated toothpaste ......... also parents have to check the toothpaste pack to know what concentration fluoride is present ........ Personally i am using a low concentration Fluoridated paste for Aditri ...... It contains 1000ppm fluoride ... some products with less fluoride is available but research shows that less than 1000ppm fluoride is not effective in caries prevention .........

Durga - If you check various brands of Tooth pastes you will notice they all contain more or less same ingredients ......... More than what brand paste what is important is that it is fluoridated and we use the correct technique to brush ..... Also flossing teeth is important in addition to brushing ........

Appuram most important thing to avoid decay is frequency of sugary attack on teeth ..... More frequent intake of sugared stuff does not allow the mouth's ph to come back to alkaline or neutral ...... The more time acidic environment is maintained in mouth- the more attack on enamel ........ leading to decay of teeth .......
Acid enga irundhu vandhadhu naan chocky thaane saapiten nu kekaravangalukku - chocky / food la irukka sugar is broken down by the bacteria resident in our mouth and acid is produced as a result ....... so brushing removes plaque9the thin film that forms in our teeth ) which is home for bacteria and which helps and provides the cozy environment for the action of bacteria/sugar/acid on teeth ..... So twice a day brushing and flossing helps minimise plaque and hence the after effects ....
so indha reason kaaga limit any sweets to meal time ........ also there are teeth friendly snacks like cheese , carrots etc as against sticky toffees ....... prefer milk to fizzy drinks or sugar laden fruit juices .........

Hope you don't mind me saying this Karti ........ sorry if i had poked my pointy nose ..........
