    Valentine’s Day, Hyderabadi ishtyle

    Valentine’s Day, Hyderabadi ishtyle

Finally, the special day is here, when heart-shaped red balloons will be found soaring in the sky, every restaurant will be decked with roses and you'll spot couples walking hand-in-hand. But what's Valentine's Day without a touch of apna Hyderabadi quirkiness to it? As cheesy as it may sound, there is nothing more enjoyable than re-visiting the Hyderabadi way of celebrating V-Day. Here is a lowdown of how to go about your day.

    The early morning date

You can begin your day by giving the bumper-to-bumper traffic a miss and start early on a bike ride (as early as 5 am). There are endless 'romantic destinations' that Hyderabadis frequent — the calm Shamirpet Lake, the serene Durgam Cheruvu, the picturesque Gandipet or even the Chilkur Balaji Temple. Like the couples of yesteryears, you could carry breakfast-for-two and have a mini-picnic of sorts at any of the destinations. Those who like their breakfast garam-garam, there are always steaming idlis at the bandis available near these places.

    Matinee time

If you are used to watching a movie in the comfort of a city multiplex, give it a rest today. Instead, head to one of those dozen single-screen theatres that dot the busy roads of Musheerabad and catch the first show of your matinee idol's film. Plus, you can let go of your inhibitions and enjoy the film without holding yourself back like you would at a posh multiplex. Hoot and whistle to your heart's content when the hero showcases his moves on the 70mm or, if the potboiler is just too bleh, just catch a nap on your Valentine's shoulders. And if you enjoyed this morning show treat, you could do an encore with the matinee show too!

    Lazy luncheon

Up next is lunch. Rather than heading to an over-priced restaurant and burning a hole in your pocket, head to a 'family restaurant'. Yes, we know it's noisy and you wouldn't like babies crying and aunties discussing soap operas, but hey! once the delicious biryani arrives and you begin to dig into it, all this will go un-noticed. And do remember to finish the meal with a cup of steaming Irani chai.

    Unwind at the lake

Post the heavy lunch, head early to quieter destinations like Necklace Road or Himayath Sagar before they get too crowded. You can always find a secluded spot where you can sit, relax and watch the sun slowly fade into the horizon while you hold your Valentine's hand, throw pebbles in the lake or simply slip into a siesta. Try and get away before the balloon boy pesters you to buy those heart-shaped balloons, unless you don't mind purchasing a few.

    Goodbye with an ice-cream

Ask pucca Hyderabadis and they will tell you that no matter how much they have eaten, there is always space for dessert. Head to Old City's hand-made Mashoor Ice Cream, that is oh-so-yummy. Dig into the divine flavours and talk about sweet nothing. After this, if you have just a lil' more time, try feeding the hundreds of pigeons just outside the venue.
