    Dysentery Cures And Treatments

Dysentery (formerly known as flux or the bloody flux) is an inflammatory disorder of the intestine, especially of the colon, that results in severe diarrhea containing mucus and/or blood in the feces with fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, dysentery can be fatal.

Dysentery is usually caused by a bacterial or protozoan infection or infestation of parasitic worms, but can also be caused by a chemical irritant or viral infection. There are two types of dysentery. The most common type is called Bacillary Dysentery and is caused by bacteria.

The bacteria enters the body through the mouth in food or water, and also by human stool and contact with infected people. The diarrhoea causes people suffering from dysentery to lose important salts and fluids from the body. Fluid replacement is essential from the beginning of dysentery. Without drinking at least as much water as one is losing in diarrhoea, the body dehydrates, the heart has to work harder and a fever starts. A oral rehydration formula called Electral can help.

The second type of dysentery is caused by amoebas and giardia which are protozoan parasites.

In the west, stool samples are normally cultured to determine the cause of dysentery. In India, testing is only done if the normal course of medicine fails. The normal course of treatment is a "shotgun" of medicine which will clear up either type of dysentery.

One can treat dysentery with home remedies. They are quite easy to prepare and are effective.

    Home Remedies for Dysentery:

    * One can chew the leaves of Butea tree in case the dysentery is mild.

    * One can make some pulp of the chebulic myrobalan. Take about 4 gm of the pulp and mix honey. Add cinnamon and clove for taste. Have it 2 times in a day.

    * Pound some curry leaves, when tender into a pulp and mix honey. Take 2 teaspoonfuls twice in a day.

    * Take seeds of henna plant, powder them finely, mix ghee and make small pellets of the size of capsules and have a pellet with water. Results can be seen within a short time.

    * Take some dry leaves of Indian hemp and some black pepper and sugar and take it in a spoon. Stools get controlled and dysentery also gets treated.

    * For treating children. Take the Indian pennywort and make into paste. Apply it on the navel of the child. Then also mix 3 to 4 leaves of the Indian pennywort with some sugar and cumin. Give it two times in a day.

    * Powder finely seeds of pomegranate as well as raisins in equal proportion. Put some salt for flavor. Take it directly or have it in solution with water. Useful for obstinate dysentery.

    * Chop about 5 to 6 holy basil leaves, sprinkle some sea salt and black pepper along with three tablespoon of curds that has been freshly prepared. Make into a mix. Have it 4 times in a day.

    * One of the main problems associated with dysentery is the loss of water through the passing of stools, which is called as dehydration. In order to prevent further complications, if you are suffering from dysentery you must take several glasses of water, with any electrolyte solution available in the market. Or you could simple squeeze a lemon in the glass of water and some sugar and rock salt in it Drinking this helps to maintain the liquid balance in the body.

    * Definitely, if there is an attack of dysentery, then the diet must be kept as simple as possible. The best food to have in these circumstances is to have cooked rice in which some water is still retained. Add some curds to this rice and eat. This food will provide the strength to the body and also help to replenish the lost water content.

    * Natural remedy for dysentery - Another food that can be ideally given to the patient is khichari, which is an Indian formation of rice gruel in which the moong dal (lentils) is boiled and added to the rice. The two are then properly pounded together to form a mixture with the consistence of a batter. This is a very easy-to-digest food for the person who is suffering from dysentery. The diet can be kept supplemented with meat and vegetable soups to supplement the lost amount of water.

Dysentery can be avoided by taking some precautions with the kind of foods you eat.

    Re: Dysentery Cures And Treatments

Keep the following things in mind:

    (i) Never eat any food that has gone stale. If food needs to be cooked, then always make it a point to eat it when it is freshly cooked.

(ii) Always use clean and filtered water for drinking. Boiling is the best way to treat water that is meant for drinking purposes.

(iii) Water that is used for cooking must also be very clean and from good sources.

(iv) Always wash fruits before eating them. Pay more attention to fruits like grapes as they can settle more dirt due to their bundled nature.

    (v) Do not eat food that has been undercooked. This is especially true in the case of flesh foods.
