FEBRILE SEIZURES in children Commonly known as FITS

Febrile Seizures in children – Commonly known as Fits

Febrile seizures or commonly known as Fits, are convulsions which occur in the babies while the infant or toddler is having a fever.

    Febrile means
    Fever . Seizure means Shaking.

It is an involuntary action due to the imbalance of the electrical impulses of the brain.

Almost 1 in 25 babies would have suffered this kind of febrile seizure.

It is very very common. The seizure associated with fever is harmless.

It may start from the 6months of the baby till the baby is 5 years old. During this period, the child might have suffered this Febrile seizure,
    more than once also.

The seizure will last only for few seconds or maximum only for 5 minutes.

If in rare cases, it lasts for more than 10 minutes, they should be immediately taken to the hospital and treated in emergency care.

What will happen during these convulsions

When the baby is running with high fever,(sometimes it can occur with low fever also), the whole body will start shaking.

The eyes will start going upwards.

. Water may roll down from the eyes.

The mouth will move towards only one side.

The baby will start to - somewhat like vomit with lots of bubbles. It will not be the regular type of vomit.

The baby will become unconscious during this time.

The conscious may be regained immediately after the convulsion or may sometimes little later, say half an hour to 1 hour.

What should the Parent or the person who takes care of the baby do

. The first step is they should not panic and stand still, in fear.

When the baby is noted to shake the baby, the immediate step to be done, is the baby should be made to lie down on one side of the body. This is very important.

Do not try to lift the child.

Be careful that the child does not fall and injure itself.

You should not try to stop the convulsion.

You should not try to stop the vomit also.

If the child is made to lie on it’s back, there is a chance of the baby to swallow the vomit. The condition may worse.

Nothing should be kept in the mouth , since, during this seizure, the child may break the product given with it’s teeth and swallow it.

Just watch the time, as how long the seizure lasts, so that it will be useful to report to the doctor.

Note down all the happenings during the convulsion and report to the doctor.

The child can be taken to the doctor after 1 hour just to have a regular check up to rule out any complications.

At the same time, if the seizure last for more than 10 minutes, immediately after the convulsion stops, the child should be taken to the doctor.

If the baby is seen to have the seizure during fever, the next time, when the baby is having fever, you should try to lower the temperature.

This can be done, by sponging the wet towel on the temple of the child and on the genital parts.

. Do not rub anything like neem oil or vicks, once the child starts to have fever. There is no proven restriction of the fits with the application of these.

Once the child is seen to have suffered from febrile seizure, the care taker should be very careful for the successive fever episodes.

If the child is being left in Creches, regularly, during it’s successive fever episodes, the parent should keep the child at home itself and take care of the baby till the fever subsides.

The Creche people may be not able to take care as the parents, and may also deny to take care, keeping in mind of the other children, who might be frightened.

Don’t get frightened, though the scene of the child suffering from convulsions may be frightening.

    Nothing alarming will happen.

Re: FEBRILE SEIZURES in children Commonly known as FITS

There are no specific reasons for these febrile seizures.

Sometimes, it may be hereditary and there is nothing to worry about the future of the child.

The child will not become Epileptic in future, due to this febrile seizures.

It depends on the age, when the baby starts to have this kind of febrile seizure. Sooner the seizures start , sooner it will end , ie., within 1 to 3 years. These children usually have the seizures which last not more than 5 minutes and it is not alarming.

If the child is having seizures without any fever or if the seizure starts initially after the age of 3, then treatments are very much necessary and the child may sometimes become epileptic in their future.
