    Garlic Rasam

This is a recipe popular in the Southern part of India. A common ingredient in most Indian cooking, garlic is known to aid lactation.

    Ingredients:
8 to 10 chopped garlic cloves
    1 tbsp tamarind paste (imli)
½ cup cooked yellow pigeon pea lentil (toor, tuvar or arhar dal)
    1 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
    1 tsp coriander seeds (dhania)
    1 tsp pepper (kali mirch)
    ¼ tsp turmeric (haldi)
    1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1 tsp uncooked red yellow pigeon pea lentil
    2-3 red chillis
    2 tomatoes
2-3 tsp ghee or cooking oil
    Salt to taste
Curry leaves and/or coriander leaves to garnish

    Method:
Roast the uncooked red gram lentils, pepper, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, red chillies and garlic and grind to a paste.
In 3 cups of water add the tamarind paste, turmeric, tomatoes, a few pieces of garlic and salt. Bring this mixture to a boil.
Add the cooked red gram lentil, ground paste and water to the desired consistency and bring the entire mixture to a boil.
Heat the mustard seeds in ghee or oil and once it starts spluttering add it to the mixture.
Garnish the rasam with curry and/or coriander leaves.

Note: This recipe may vary a bit from region to region. Some may choose to add ginger or ginger powder (saunth) and others may not use cooked red gram dal. You can fine tune this recipe according to your taste.

    Red Lentil Dal (Masoor dal)

Masoor dal is a popular dish in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, known to stimulate lactation in nursing mothers. It is rich in iron and a great source of fibre.

    Ingredients:
1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
    1 medium-sized onion
    3 medium-sized tomatoes
4 garlic cloves chopped or minced
    1 tbsp ginger minced
    ½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
    ½ tsp mustard seeds (rai)
    ½ tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)
    1- 2 green chillies
    ½ tsp turmeric
4 to 5 cups of water or vegetable broth
    1 tsp garam masala
    Salt and pepper to taste
    Coriander leaves (dhania) for garnishing
    2 tsp ghee or oil

    Method:
Place a deep cooking pot (kadai) on the gas and add ghee or oil. Once the oil is hot, add all the seeds.
Then add the chopped onion. Wait for it to turn golden and then mix the ginger and garlic.
Add the turmeric, garam masala and salt and cook for about 5 minutes.
Add the water and stir the ingredients well. Then add the lentils and bring the heat down and let it simmer for about 15 to 20minutes.
Then add the chopped tomatoes, green chillies and more water for desired consistency. Simmer for 8 to 10 minutes or till the lentils are thoroughly cooked.
    Garnish with chopped coriander.

Note: If you feel comfortable using a pressure cooker, then you can make this dish in half the time,
