What is postpartum period?
The period i.e., 4 to 6 weeks after delivery is said to be postpartum period. This period is emotionally hard for the new moms as there will a lot of changes taking place in the the body, the pregnancy hormones will be rushing back to normal, The never ending needs of the new born, Sleep deprivation(lack of sleep),Transition to motherhood, Engorging breasts, new added responsibilities. This will cause you baby blues..But if the symptoms worsens or prolonging for more than 3/4 weeks then you should check with your health care provider. you may have postpartum depression. This is may start right after giving birth to your baby and last for up to an year.
These are the symptoms for Postpartum Depression:
Symptoms may include:
Some women with PPD believe they can't adequately care for their baby or may harm their baby.
- Irritability or hypersensitivity
- Difficulty concentrating
- Anxiety and worry
- Crying or tearfulness
- Negative feelings such as sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, or guilt
- Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy
- Difficulty sleeping (especially returning to sleep)
- Fatigue or exhaustion
- Changes in appetite or eating habits
- Headaches, stomachaches, muscle or backaches

The most important thing to do is to do something that you did BEFORE the baby was born. Example, make one night a week a "Mom Night". Just go out by yourself, leave the baby with Daddy or some other family or friend, and buy yourself a big ice cream while you read the latest gossip mag in a bookstore. Trust me, it will only make you a better mom to get a break!
