It is very important for a child to develop reading habits in his pre-school age. Parents can prepare their child to be a successful reader before they began any type of formal education.

Here are some actions that parents can do to help their children become a successful reader:


  • Story telling is excellent way to develop reading habits. But only reading story is not enough. Discuss the story after reading. Let your child point out letters, shapes, colors, and animals. It generates the interest of child.
  • Choose silent atmosphere for reading to your child. It may be bedtime or after dinner.
  • Children always imitate their parents. If reading is not important for you child will always consider it as a boring thing.
  • Selection of place in your home is also important. It should be a special place, like a pile of pillows on the floor or a comfortable chair.
  • Ask the child to select a book which he wants to listen.
  • Make your home a print rich environment. Children love to read it.
  • Read aloud to your child every day.
  • Encourage your child to tell you stories of his or her own using the imagination power.
  • Always keep paper, crayons, and paint in the kitchen and in other rooms where the child may be. Wonderful, spontaneous little pictures come in odd moments.
