Dear shonali, it is brought to your kind notice in abroad and all they start swimming in the early age of eight months itself. it all depends upon your baby's physical condition, health, immunity power and so many other factors. please consult your baby's doctor for good advise. it is always to start extra curricular activities very early life of the child. thanks

    hai sonali,

it is better if u strt the extra curricular activities for ur kid at small age itself..if u want ur child good in song or dance then u can make them start at 4 or 5..but if want ur children best in swimming or gymnastics then you can start at 2 1/2 to ..4..
If ur child is shy type then you can make them to participate in team activities like cricket, football, etc.,
U can also train ur children in chess, speech, etc.,Now a days photographic classes are also came to make good photographers....
Now a days the schools are also doing the same...they r conducting craft and drawing classes....In states like Gujarath, they are giving this as a main for for students below 5th std...
they r giving bindhi drawing, glass painting, pencil waste painting, gardening, etc.,so those child are very eager to go to school...
In tamil nadu now only these things started through "samacheer kalvi"...but not efective like the previous one..

Re: Extra curricular activities for kids

    Hi Shonali!

Agree with Sumi and Vaish. Think they have covered everything

Whats the age of ur child? I would say, it is better to wait till 5 years for extra activities like music, dance , chess or any sport, instrument learning, painting etc.

In the mean while, try to find out ur child's interest. That will help him to learn with passion..

I fully agree with Deepa and Vaishanav. We will be interested to put our children in so many extra curricular actvities. but what our children thinks ? We have to try to find out their interest. That will help our childre to learn with passion..Hence Shonali! has to do so much home work and study about her child's interest and then decide. thanks

Re: Extra curricular activities for kids

    Dear Shonali!

Extracurricular activities are those sponsored by and usually held at school but that are not part of the academic curriculum. They often involve some time commitment outside of the regular school day.

Kids should reach certain age that they can understand things and happenings around them individually then only they can participate in those activities perfectly. it should be either 6 or 7.

In today's fashion, it has become a trend of making children indulge in extra activities from their early childhood days. It seems to be a necessity rather than fun. Parents are too possessive about their children's future and they try to make their children get the best in today's competitive scenario.

No doubt, extracurricular is beneficial for children's health and mind as well. But, for activities like swimming and gymnastics, there should be a certain age limit. I would say, an age of 5 is too early to start with. A kid should be capable enough of understanding his way of interest and choose among the best.

For those students who are interested in social life they may become volunteers and perform different socially-related activities: to help old people, plant trees, tutor other students on different subjects etc.

The choice of extracurricular activity depends on the student’s capability and efficiency, because he/she should be aware of the aspects of life he/she is interested in and get pleasure being occupied with this or that activity.

    Some examples:

Sports: tennis, swimming, cricket, football, golf, table tennis, badminton, horseback riding etc.

Dance: Ranging from classical (examples: Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Odissi, Ballet) to the bollywood dancing

Music: Carnatic vocal; Hindustani vocal; instruments like flute, tabla, piano, guitar, drums, sitar etc.

    Art and craft classes.

Also other activities like playing indoor games chess, carrom and also gymnastics etc.

Our role as parents is not to thrust our ambitions on them but to help them unearth their passions and calling in life and actualize their potential. The right exposure to activities in life is an important step in that direction.

At the same time it is very important that children have adequate unstructured fallow time to just be - hang-out casually at home or with friends, do things spontaneously, relax, even get bored - remember that little boredom can be the fountainhead of exploration and creativity. Ensure that your child is not over-scheduled or over-stimulated.

In general, most parents and childhood experts agree that 6 or 7 years are appropriate for starting to participate in extracurricular classes . By this age, kids can are reasonably independent and can take classes without their parents, have the attention span and the developmental base for classes.

It depends on the activity and the teachers. For example, for piano classes, most teachers want children to start when they are old enough to have the attention span and the fine motor skills for musical instruments and young enough to have the flexibility - typically around when children are 6 or 7. Of course it depends on the child.
