How to deal with psychosexual disorders

How to deal with psychosexual disorders

Psychosexual disorders are the disturbances in the body's sexual function, because of emotional or mental causes.

They, usually, take birth when a person's imagination paints an abstract sexual picture, which consists of thoughts that aren't in sync with reality. Particularly in men, they occur because of reduced sexual desire, delayed ejaculation or impotency and in women, they occur because of inadequate lubrication, painful intercourse or the inability to achieve orgasm. Dr. Pulkit Sharma, Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalytical Therapist, tells us about the major types of psychosexual disorders and how can they can be treated.

    Understanding psychosexual disorders:
Psychosexual disorders are conditions where the person is sexually fit in the physical sense but experiences difficulty in sex due to psychological or emotional factors. Many people suffering from psychosexual disorders do not understand their condition and feel that there is something physically wrong with them. The problem, however is in the mind and not in the body. Deep-seated conflicts and anxiety lead to psychosexual disorders. Psychosexual disorders are of three types- sexual dysfunction, sexual perversion and gender identity disorder. Let us understand them in detail.

    Sexual dysfunction:
Sexual dysfunctions are impairments experienced during any one of the three stages of sexual activity- desire, arousal or orgasm. The person suffering from sexual desire disorder has little or no desire for indulging in or imagining sexual activity. The person suffering from sexual arousal disorder wishes to have sex but cannot attain or maintain the desired sexual response for instance erectile dysfunction in men and frigidity in women. The person suffering from sexual orgasm disorder has difficulty or delay in experiencing orgasm and finds sexual activity dissatisfactory.

    Sexual perversion:
In sexual perversion, the person experiences sexual excitement or orgasm only when they indulge in unusual, deviant or extreme sexual acts. The most common sexual perversions include- giving or receiving suffering during the sexual act, dressing up and behaving like the opposite gender, watching other people having sex, indulging in a sexual act with a non-consenting person and attraction to a non-living object. Usually, sexual perversions come into existence following a severe trauma in childhood after which the person becomes fixated on pain.

    Gender identity disorder:
The person feels dissatisfied with their physical gender and identifies with the opposite gender. A man may feel like a woman trapped inside the body of a man while a woman may feel like a man trapped inside the body of a woman. The person wishes to change his or her biological sex and live like the opposite sex. They suffer from depression, anxiety and emptiness as a result.

    Treatment of psychosexual disorders:
Shame and misinformation regarding psychosexual disorders prevent people from taking treatment, or end up choosing the wrong treatment. Psychotherapies which work with the unconscious mind, including psychoanalysis and hypnotherapy are quite effective in treating psychosexual disorders. Through psychotherapy the unconscious conflict is understood and worked through and this leads to the removal of the symptoms and effects of the psychosexual disorder.
