    The modern day lifestyle is marked by high levels of physical and psychological stress. Chronic stress can cause many psychological and psycho-somatic ailments. Therefore, it is important to know how to relax to be able to better handle stress-related conditions. In this article, we reveal easy yet effective ways to relax which can ensure you stay calm and cool even in the most trying situations.

    How to Relax
    Get Plenty of Sleep
    It is essential to get adequate hours of quality sleep every night. Lack of sleep can only affect your ability to handle stress the next day. Insomniacs can try yoga nidra (yogic sleep) which is known to relax body and mind, and promote sound sleep. You can also try vigorous exercising during the day which will make your body tired so that you will drop into deep sleep the moment you hit the bed.

    Take Relaxation Time-Outs Every Day
    Even if you have a grueling daily schedule, ensure you allot enough time just to relax. During this period, you can practice yoga, pranayama or meditation. Or, simply listen to soothing music to calm and relax your body and mind. If you can afford it, get yourself a rejuvenating massage at a nearby parlor. You can also try a soothing warm bath after a hard day’s grind.

    Another great way to relax is to watch funny programs on TV. Simply watching the thoughts pass by in your mind as you relax in silence and solitude is itself a great stress-busting technique as it can increase your awareness and mindfulness about the reasons that cause psychological stress.

    Eat a Healthy Diet
    A bad diet can cause health problems and add to your stress. So, avoid excessive consumption of coffee, junk food and sugary drinks. Your daily diet should comprise of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains such as grapes, apples, broccoli, carrots, whole grain breads and brown rice. Foods with low-calorie protein can boost your energy levels. These foods include low-fat dairy, green leafy veggies, legumes, fish and chicken. To combat stress, you can also take supplements of known stress-busters such as vitamin D and vitamin B.

    Avoid Obnoxious People
    One of the main causes of daily stress is having to deal with toxic and obnoxious people who create nightmarish interpersonal relationships. If you find that some of your family members, colleagues or neighbors are insufferable, simply avoid having anything to do with them. Sometimes, it is best not to run along with the madding crowd and simply take the road less traveled.

    Become More Spiritual
    Some of the common causes of psychological stress are unfounded fears, great expectations and blind attachment to things and people. You can overcome these causes by becoming a more spiritual person. Spirituality teaches us to give our best at any task without expecting rewards. You will be able to overcome all fears when you realize that everything happens for the best in God’s cosmic plan. You will also be able to transcend blind attachment to transitory material things and distinguish between permanent values and temporary attractions.
