    Treatments & Preventions Of Depression

Having depression doesn't mean that a person is weak, or a failure, or isn't really trying, it means they need Treatment. Most people with depression can be helped with Counseling, provided by a professional psychologist, and some are helped with Counseling and Medicine. Treatment for depression works gradually over several weeks. Nature of depression is such that a person's normal ability to balance positive with negative thoughts is impaired.

Counseling, or psychotherapy, means talking about feelings with a trained psychologist who can help you change the relationships, thoughts, or behaviors that are causing the depression. Medicine is used to treat depression that is severe or disabling.

Depression is usually treated in two steps.

    1. Acute treatment: The aim of acute treatment is to remove the symptoms of depression until you feel well.
    2. Continuation treatment: Continuation treatment on the other hand is continuing the treatment for some time even after you are well. It is important because it keeps the episode of depression from coming back.

    How is Depression treated?

    • There are many treatments available for depression, including counseling and medicines, but the first step is always to get a physical and psychological assessment to find out whether you have a depressive illness.
    • Anti-depressant medications are often used. There are different types and the doctor will recommend which is the right one under the particular circumstances.
    • Antidepressant medicine combined with psychotherapy.
    • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): Electroconvulsive Therapy has received some bad press as a result of what the treatment used to be. Yet "ECT has a higher success rate for severe depression than any other form of treatment."
    • Light Therapy: It involves increased exposure to natural or artificial light. This treatment is normally used for patients who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

How long will the depression last?
This depends on how soon you get help. Left untreated, depression can last for weeks, months or even years. The main risk in not getting treatment is suicide. Treatment can help depression lift in 6 to 8 weeks, or less. With medicine, most people see some benefits by 3 or 4 weeks; with psychotherapy alone, it can sometimes take longer.

    Reasons of getting early treatment

    • Early treatment helps keep depression from getting worse or lasting a long time.
    • Thoughts of suicide are common in people with depression. The risk of suicide is higher if you don't get treatment for your depression. When depression is successfully treated, the thoughts of suicide will go away.
    • Treatment can help you return to your "normal" self, enjoying life.
    • Treatment can help prevent depression from coming back.

Healthy lifestyle habits can help prevent depression, or lessen the chances of it happening again. These habits include eating properly, sleeping adequately, exercising regularly, learning to relax, and not drinking alcohol or using drugs.
