14 Addictions You Might Be Practicing Unknowingly

Alcohol addiction, dependence on drugs, cigarette cravings are some of the common and widely snubbed addictions. But you will be surprised to know that there are some whacky, unusual and unspoken addictions which people are practicing, sometimes without even realizing. Here we list 14 such addictions which usually go unnoticed. Are you addicted to any from the list?

    What is addiction?

‘Addiction is the continued use of a mood altering substance or behavior despite adverse dependency consequences, or a neurological impairment leading to such behaviors.’ As mentioned on Wikipedia,Addiction

We may not want to admit it but we all know that we are addicted to something and practising it takes up a lot of time. Dare to find out your addiction?
    Addiction #1

    Seeking Pain

You may be thinking, who in the world looks for pain? But there are people who seek pain to distract themselves from the reality of life. They self inflict pain via different methods (which we shall not mention) and may tilt towards suicidal tendencies.

    Addiction #2

Using the internet and the computer

You may deny it, but it’s true! You are addicted to using the computer and internet – especially if you wake up with the urge to check mails and get the latest news update. This behaviour goes on till you hit the sack; just one final look at updates… sounds familiar?

    Addiction #3

    Social media

You may argue that all you want to do is to stay in touch with your friends but the need to contantly check your Facebook page even when you are out with friends is a sign; you are an addict.

    Addiction #4

    Over eating

Gluttony and greed qualifies as an addiction as well. Over eating is generally a way to cover up your true emotions; you may have heard of emotional eating. This unhealthy habit has its repercussions on your body and health. Psst… overeating will not solve your problems.

    Addicted to love

These are signs of love addiction:

    1) You are obsessed with romance in music and films.
    2) Do you try to change the person early in the relationship rather than admit that he or she is not right for you?
    3) You continued to be in a bad relationship for the sake of companionship.
    4) If you are single, you worried about not finding someone quickly and you feel you need to be loved.
    5) Have you forced yourself to fall in love?

    Addiction #6

Sex is an addiction but very few admit it. If sex takes up most of your mental space or you connect sexually with the opposite sex more often than needed, then you could be a sex addict.

    Addiction #7

‘Cybersex, also called computer sex, Internet sex, netsex, mudsex, TinySex and, colloquially, cybering or conversex is a virtual sex encounter in which two or more persons connected remotely via computer network send each other sexually explicit messages describing a sexual experience. In one form, this fantasy sex is accomplished by the participants describing their actions and responding to their chat partners in a mostly written form designed to stimulate their own sexual feelings and fantasies.’ As mentioned on Wikipedia,Cybersex

It could be a solution for long distance relationships, but this form of sex can get abnormal if you spend a lot of time online looking for sexual partners.

    Addiction #8

Fitness and exercise can elevate your mood, but dependence on exercise to pump up your mood, spending too much time in the gym and experiencing withdrawal symptoms like frustration and anxiety if you skip it for one day, are signs of a addiction.

    Addiction #9

    Video games

Playing video games or computer games can be very addictive. You spend hours trying to complete levels and getting the highest score. This is a growing trend among teenagers and young adults. Generally it is a phase and it passes but if dosent, then its sign of a addiction.

    Addiction #10

Guys love playing computer games and women love shopping; even if it is just window shopping. But compulsive shopping to uplift mood is a serious addiction and should be resolved.

    Addiction #11

Pyro means fire in Greek, and it is a tendency to set things on fire to release stress and anxiety. Luckily, there are not many cases of pyromaniacs in the city, or are there?

    Addiction #12

Kleptomania is a compulsive habit to steal, which is also linked to other addictions like over-eating and substance abuse. Kleptomaniacs steal without a sense of guilt but instead find relief in the act.

    Addiction #13

Everyone wants to clock out at 5 and escape additional work during the day, but there are some who are the complete opposite. They don’t mind extra work and responsibilities and prefer to work non stop. This addiction breaks up families and isolates the addict from his / her loved ones.

    Addiction # 14

    Religious devotion

It may seem sacrilegious and blasphemous to talk against religion, but there are those who continuously link and reason every activity to their religious beliefs.
