    Any event in life that a person finds threatening, difficult to cope with or causes excess pressure can be a potential cause of stress. It is important to bear in mind that stress is an individualistic, subjective experience and therefore what one person finds stressful another may not.

    The causes of stress are known as stressors and there are literally hundreds of different types of stressors

    There are two types of stress

    1. External Stressors

    a. Major Life Events

    Death of the family member, loss of properties, betrayal , unjustice , job conditions, educational problems etc are external causes of stress.

    b. ) Daily Hassles

    The majority of causes of stress that we face on a day-to-day basis are not as extreme as life events. The day-to-day causes of stress are called daily hassles

    Some Examples of Daily Hassles

    · Misplacing keys, Arguments, Traffic jams, Time pressures, Lack of sleep,

    · Fear of Crime, Shopping, Bureaucracy, Waiting, Loneliness, Pollution, Gossip, Difficult neighbours etc


    2. Internal Stressor


    Its our own internal beliefs, attitudes, interpretations, perceptions and other factors, in combination with the external events that tend to create stress. Internal factors which influence how we perceive stress include our:

    Beliefs

    · Expectations

    · Locus of control


    · Low assertion

    · Low self esteem

    · People pleasing


    · Perception

    · Perfectionism

    · Personality

    Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule,your environment, and the way you deal with problems. The ultimate goal is a balanced life, with time for work, relationships, relaxation, and fun – plus the resilience to hold up under pressure and meet challenges head on.

    Relaxation steps

    1. Close your eyes – The act of simply closing your eyes causes a change in brainwave production from fast-paced beta brainwaves to slower, peaceful alpha waves. Give yourself at least 10 – 15 minutes of quiet time with
    your eyes closed and you’ll naturally feel more relaxed.

    2.To identify your true sources of stress, look closely at your habits, attitude, and excuses

    3. A stress journal can help you identify the regular stressors in your life and the way you deal with them

    4..Relax your tongue – Sounds fairly silly and ridiculous, yet it is an extremely potent way to effectively calm your mind

    5. Learn how to say “no” – Know your limits and stick to them

    6. Avoid hot-button topics – If you get upset over religion or politics, cross them off your conversation list.

    7. Go jogging, walking, hiking – Exercise is a great way to desensitize your nervous system and do away with stressful feelings.

    8. Avoid people who stress you out – If someone consistently causes stress in your life and you can’t turn the relationship around, limit the amount of time you spend with that person or end the relationship entirely.

    9. Lay out in the sun – Laying out and soaking up sun rays naturally boosts levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin,and allows us to effectively go into a deep state of relaxation.

    10. Take control of your environment – If the evening news makes you anxious, turn the TV off. If traffic’s got you tense,take a longer but less-traveled route.

    11. Guided meditations – Guided meditations usually involve an individual consciously relaxing their entire body.
    Set aside 10 – 15 minutes to scale your body for areas of tension and replace all tension with a feeling of relaxation.

    12. Pare down your to-do list – Analyze your schedule, responsibilities, and daily tasks. If you’ve got too much on your plate, distinguish between the “shoulds” and the “musts.

    13. Deep breathing – We all realize that when we allow ourselves to be overcome with stress, our breathing cycle is shorter and quicker than normal. To directly attack stress, take deep breaths by inhaling through your nose
    and exhaling through your mouth

    14.Get a massage – If you just don’t feel like doing any of the other suggestions, getting a quality massage will be extremely effective at reducing your stress.

    15. Express your feelings instead of bottling them up. If something or someone is bothering you, communicate your concerns in an open and respectful way.

    16. Take a vacation – Sometimes when we allow ourselves to get caught up in a work-related stress cycle, the best thing to do is take a nice vacation.

    17. Be willing to compromise. When you ask someone to change their behavior, be willing to do the same.

    18. Lift weights, pump some iron – There has been mounting evidence that lifting weights is great for relieving stress.

    19. Manage your time better. Poor time management can cause a lot of stress.

    20.Talk with friends, release some heat – Expressing your emotions by having a quality conversation about your stress with a trusted friend will always help relieve stress

    21.Look at the big picture. Take perspective of the stressful situation. Ask yourself how important it will be in the long run. If the answer is no, focus your time and energy elsewhere.

    22. Get involved with nature – Experience nature and appreciate it’s beauty.

    23. Adjust your standards. Perfectionism is a major source of avoidable stress

    24. Take a nap – We already know that taking a nap has been proven to boost brain power, but what you may not think about are the stress relieving benefits that napping can provide.

    25.Focus on the positive. When stress is getting you down, take a moment to reflect on all the things you appreciate in your life, including your own positive qualities and gifts.

    26.Look for the upside. As the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth

    27.Listen to soothing music –

    28. Say a peaceful prayer – Say a prayer that resonates with your purpose, beliefs, and soul’s values. Keeping your prayers peaceful and add visualizations if necessary

    29.Share your feelings. make an appointment with a therapist.

    30. Be around calm people; positive people – A great technique is to surround yourself with calm people.

    31. Hit a punching bag – If you feel that you need to release some pent up stress from your muscles, got hit a punching bag until you can no longer move your body.

    32.Learn to forgive. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world and that people make mistakes.

    33. Take a soothing bath

    34- Do shopping

    35. select a new perfume

    36. Sex with your soulmate. sex is also a stress killer

    Releasing the pressure, it's good for the teapot and the water. Try it sometime.

    The warning sings of stress

    Don't ignore the warning signs of stress
    It can lead to other health problems
    Stressed? Aren't we all.
    Between work, family obligations and money worries,
    it may all feel too overwhelming sometimes.
    Of course, there is good stress and bad stress.
    The first one can motivate you to become more productive.
    The second kind, the type that makes you lose sleep,
    can actually be bad for your mental and physical health.
    Here's a handy guide to help you assess whether you're stressed,
    how serious your stress is, and how to deal with it.
    Stress warning signs

    Of course, different people deal with stress in different ways,
    but here is a list of mental and physical symptoms to help you
    understand if you're stressed.
    The mental symptoms may involve you being:

    •Angry
    •Depressed
    •Anxious
    •Always hungry, or having no appetite
    •Crying often
    •Have trouble sleeping and feel tired
    •Have trouble concentrating

    The physical symptoms may involve:

    Chest pains
    Constipation, or diarrhoea
    Cramps, or muscle aches
    Feeling dizzy, or fainting
    Engaging in nervous behavior like biting your nails
    Twitches, or experiencing pins and needles
    Feeling restless
    Feeling breathless
    Can't sleep



    Having just a few of these symptoms may indicate that you are stressed,
    and you should address the issue.

    How stress works

    When you are in a stressful situation, your body releases the hormones cortisol,
    adrenaline, and noradrenaline, and these go on to cause the physical symptoms of stress.
    You may start sweating, and your blood pressure and heart rate may rise.
    This, in turn, may undermine your immune system, making you more
    susceptible to illness, as well as lead your body to release fat and sugar
    into your blood stream, which may lead you to gain weight.
    As stress raises your blood pressure, if you are stressed in the long term,
    you can develop high blood pressure, which in turn can increase your risk of
    having a heart attack or a stroke.
    If you feel that you are suffering from stress, see you GP,
    but do not accept long term tranquilliser prescriptions.
    Ask for help from a psychologist, stress counsellor, relaxation therapist,
    qualified hypnotherapist or even alternative therapist.
    If these do not work, you must go back to your GP for professional guidance

    Stress is strongly tied to cardiac disease, hypertension, inflammatory diseases, and compromised immune systems,

    And stress can literally break your heart. “broken heart syndrome,” occurs when the bottom of the heart balloons into the shape of a pot (a tako-tsubo) used in Japan to trap octopus. It’s caused when grief or another extreme stressor makes stress hormones flood the heart.

    The hormone cortisol is Elevated gives us a short-term boost but also suppresses the immune system, elevates blood sugar, and impedes bone formation.

    Stress during pregnancy has also been linked to offspring with autism.

    What Is Stress?

    Stress is a feeling that's created when we react to particular events. It's the body's way of rising to a challenge and preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina, and heightened alertness.
    The events that provoke stress are called stressors, and they cover a whole range of situations — everything from outright physical danger to making a class presentation or taking a semester's worth of your toughest subject.

    The human body responds to stressors by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. The hypothalamus signals the adrenal glands to produce more of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and release them into the bloodstream. These hormones speed up heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and metabolism. Blood vessels open wider to let more blood flow to large muscle groups, putting our muscles on alert. Pupils dilate to improve vision. The liver releases some of its stored glucose to increase the body's energy. And sweat is produced to cool the body. All of these physical changes prepare a person to react quickly and effectively to handle the pressure of the moment.
    This natural reaction is known as the stress response. Working properly, the body's stress response enhances a person's ability to perform well under pressure. But the stress response can also cause problems when it overreacts or fails to turn off and reset itself properly.

    Good Stress and Bad Stress


    The stress response (also called the fight or flight response) is critical during emergency situations, such as when a driver has to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. It can also be activated in a milder form at a time when the pressure's on but there's no actual danger — like stepping up to take the foul shot that could win the game, getting ready to go to a big dance, or sitting down for a final exam. A little of this stress can help keep you on your toes, ready to rise to a challenge. And the nervous system quickly returns to its normal state, standing by to respond again when needed.

    But stress doesn't always happen in response to things that are immediate or that are over quickly. Ongoing or long-term events, like coping with a divorce or moving to a new neighborhood or school, can cause stress, too.

    Long-term stressful situations can produce a lasting, low-level stress that's hard on people. The nervous system senses continued pressure and may remain slightly activated and continue to pump out extra stress hormones over an extended period. This can wear out the body's reserves, leave a person feeling depleted or overwhelmed, weaken the body's immune system, and cause other problems.
