    Story Telling Tips for Parents:

Do you remember your childhood days when you are hearing stories from your grandparents that always start with the same instroduction; 'Once upon a time...'? Don't you still love those stories?

But today how many of us tell stories to our children? In our hurry-burry lifestyle, we spend less time to tell stories to our children. Try these simple techniques to tell stories effectively.

    1. Look the child in the eyes:

This is the most important storytelling techniques. When you are holding a book, you can't fully engage the child as you are giving your focus to the story. If you look at the child in the eyes, then you can see the excitement building in their eyes or may be some confusions and know you have to take your story slower. Also, the children get to see your enthusiasm as they watch you tell the story.

    2. Use gestures freely:

When you are telling a story about an elephant, become the elephant . Show the long trunk using your arm as you make the elephant's sounds! Point out where the characters are going. Put your hand to your brow as you squint to see far off things.

When you are telling stories for the children, remember that in their little minds, they often think the story is really happening! Use your whole body to tell stories! Remember, your voice is part of the story telling process, use a loud and gruff voice to represent anything big and gigantic and a shrill and squeaky voice to represent something that is really small and weak.

    3. Expect a demand for repeat performances!

It's a normal for a child to want the same story repeated or retold over and over again. Children love repetition. There's something in your great story that the child subconsciously needs to learn or understand. So, when you are asked for the same story by your child, know that you are helping your child to grow and learn. Literacy begins at home! Am I right ?

Learn some classic bedtime stories and join the fun of storytelling with the children.

    Benefits of Storytelling...

    • Increases children's willingness to communicate their thoughts and feelings.
    • Encourages active participation.
    • Increases verbal proficiency.
    • Encourages imagination and creativity.
    • Encourages co-operation between kids.
    • Enhances the listening skills.

    Stories recommended for kids:

    1. Aesop Fables
    2. Panchatantra Stories
    3. Tenali Raman Stories
    4. Birbal Stories
    5. Alice's Adventures in the Wonderland
    6. Tolstoy Stories
    7. Diary of Anne Frank.

    Re: Parenting Guidelines

Friends, today shall we know some valid points about how to discipline our child?

    How to discipline your child?

Discipline is necessary to be successful. Teaching your child about the importance of discipline at a young age will help him a lot in the future. A disciplined approach to life is always rewarding.

We look at a few tips that could help you to teach your child how to be disciplined.

    1. Tell your child what you expect:

Children learn by observing others. They do what others do. Am I right ? Clearly explain the kind of behavior you expect from your child by doing it so. This will give them an opportunity to ask you questions when they see others behaving differently.

    2. Start them at right age:

Teach your child discipline at the right age. Do not start too early or too late. The ideal age to start teaching a child, discipline, is between 4 and 6 years of age.

    3. Give them practical advice:

Explain your child about what needs to be done with correct reasons.
Stick to your stand, but clarify why.

For example, consider this: "Wash your legs after you come back from school". That doesn't mean they understand that dirty feet need to be washed. They may come back after running on the streets, and still do not wash their dirty feet. Hense, say: "Wash your legs when they're dirty". Only then, they begin to apply what they learn in one situation, to another.

    4. Develop routines:

The best way to discipline your child is by creating routines that work for the whole family. Establishing routines for meal time, bath time and bedtime helps your child know what to expect and what's expected of him/her.

    5. Wait for their perfection:

If you try to enforce too much discipline, the child may become too rebellious as the numerous restrictions might stress them out.

Appreciate the effort of your child and wait for their perfections, so that you improvise your child's discipline. Remember, appreciation inspires improvement. Criticism doesn't make it .

Raising a child is a tough job. But as children learn to control their own behavior and actions, it gets easier and easier. So, take your initial efforts today and the rest will be followed by your loving ones !

    Re: Parenting Guidelines

Friends, shall we know 'How to handle our techno tots' today?

How to handle your techno tots?

Is your toddler learning to play computer games and other electronic gadgets?

Do they spend more time with their keypads than their colouring charts? It's a good thing that they get exposed to the technological world, but it is also important to make your kids realize the value of other social activities too.

Introducing your child to technology through computers and electronic games is important, but there should be a healthy balance. It's even more important for your 'techno tot' to spend time in social activities with you and the family.

Here are a few simple tips to make your child to balance both the hi-tech gadgets and the practical world.

    1. Physical activities:

Make your child to do things by his/her own hands. For example, holding a crayon or a pencil requires coordination and the use of the muscles. A handwritten note or the letter also requires patience. This makes your child not to depend on some other technological means. Through this practice, they learn to use their physic and mind, instead of depending on devices.

    2. Parent's involvement:

Ebooks are great tools for helping your children to improve their reading skills without adult supervision. However, there is something special about a parent and child, reading stories together. A mom's facial expression or a father's special sound effects adds a quality that cannot be duplicated in an Ebook. Spend some quality time with your child so that he/she gets fascinated with your descriptions.

    3. Outdoor activities:

Involve the children in the outdoor activities too. Learning to jump rope, planting a garden or playing leap frog with a sibling are very good physical exercise which also help them mentally. Besides the physical strength you toddler gains from playing, he or she also learns self-control and develops a sense of self-worth.

When you teach them to balance the reel and the real, it means you are ensuring them a confident and healthy future.

    4. Praise the child:

Whenever you have time, ask your children about the story that just have heard and make them recall as many details as possible. Praise their learning skills. Treat them with a special reward if they recall specific details. Let them feel that listening, learning and memorizing are fun.

    Re: Parenting Guidelines

Friends, today's parenting topic is 'Help your kid to do homework effectively'.

Help your kids to do homework effectively

Difficulties around completing homework are among the most common complaints of the parents. Problems in homework completion create stress for the child and difficulties in learning.

Parents can give kids lots of homework help. But resist the urge to provide the right answers or complete assignments.

Here are some tips to make homework easier for kids:

    1. Give them with the right space:

Wherever kids do homework, it's important to make sure their work space is well-lit, comfortable and stocked with school supplies.

    2. Protect the space from distractions:

Make it clear that there's no TV, phone calls, video game-playing etc., until homework is done and checked.

    3. Establish a routine:

Send the message that schoolwork is a top priority. Draw some rules like setting a regular time and place each day for homework to be done.

    4. Help them to draw Strategy:

Teach kids to take stock of how much homework there is and how to plan the whole job. Let them create a strategy that fits their workloads and temperaments.

    5. Allow the kid to take break:

Allow them to take a break if needed, then guide them back to the homework with fresh focus and energy.

    6. Instill organization skills:

Most kids first encounter multiple teachers and classrooms for the first time. Teach your child how to use a time table or personal planner to get organized.

    7. Apply school to the 'real world':

Talk about how what they're learning now applies outside the classroom. For example, the importance of meeting deadlines is necessary not only for home work, but also for everybody's job.
