Teen Acne Treatments for Oily Skin

Treating oily skin can help teens overcome embarrassing acne breakouts. Oily skin is the result of pores producing too much sebum, a natural substance that helps the body stay moisturized. When too much sebum builds up, pores can become blocked. Dirt and oil irritate clogged pores, which turn red and appear blotchy and bumpy. To reduce acne, a teen must regularly clean his face and use products that help keep pores from becoming clogged.

    Facial Cleansers

Gently clean your face twice a day using a gentle cleanser and warm water. Cleansers can be found at the drugstore. Choose a cleanser specifically made for oily skin or find products that include the word "noncomedogenic" on the label. Noncomedogenic products contain little or no oil. Pat your face dry with a soft cloth. Avoid scrubbing your face. Use an alcohol-free toner after cleaning your face to reduce oil production and tighten pores.

    Natural Acne Toner

Natural ingredients such as witch hazel can be used as a toner. For those with sensitive skin, witch hazel is gentle and soothing. You can purchase witch hazel at most drugstores and supermarkets. Also look for toners and other skincare products that contain witch hazel. Additional natural ingredients that can be used as facial toner include aloe and apple juice mixed with lime juice.

    Acne Medication

Over-the-counter acne-treatment products that contain benzoyl perioxide and salicylic acid help fight existing breakouts while preventing new ones. Use acne treatments as directed on the label. If skin becomes dry, discontinue or use only on areas where breakouts have occurred. Prescription acne treatments such as accutane, antibiotics and steroid injections are also available if you have frequent or severe breakouts. Consult your dermatologist for more information about prescription acne products.

    Oily Skin Masks

Clay or mud masks help absorb oil from pores to prevent acne breakouts. Use a mask once a week to help keep skin looking fresh and blemish-free. Combine egg whites, cooked oatmeal, bits of apple and lemon juice to make a facial mask at home. The mask should be applied to the face and left for at least 15 minutes or until the mask begins to dry and crack. To remove the mask, wash face in warm water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Apply an oil-free moisturizer afterward to prevent skin dryness.

    Protect Your Face

Protect your face from future breakouts by wearing an oil-free moisturizer that contains an SPF of 15 or higher. Sunlight can increase sebum oil production, which encourages acne. Wash your hair often to prevent the oils on your hair from getting on your face. If you participate in sports such as football or baseball, use travel facial cleanser wipes to remove excess sweat and oil from your face, neck and back.
