    10 best women safety apps

With crimes against women in India (especially in metro cities) on the rise, ensuring their safety has become more important than ever. Although the government is taking steps for women's safety, technology can play an important part in that too.

So on the occasion of International Women's Day, we've compiled a list of ten smartphone apps that come with features that can help women to feel a little safer. Most of these apps have basically the same underlying concept - transmission of user's GPS-determined location to a preset list of emergency contacts.

Read on and see which one(s) you or the women in your family/group of friends can benefit from.

    Safetipin

Safetipin is quite a good app aimed at the safety of women. It is designed keeping in mind the concept of personal safety and incorporates all essential features such as GPS tracking, emergency contact numbers, directions to safe locations and more. The app 'pins' the safe areas along with their safety scores to go at the time of a problem. It also enables users to pin unsafe areas and help others. Besides English, Safetipin is available in Hindi, Bahasa and Spanish languages.
    VithU: V Gumrah Initiative
VithU is a popular emergency app that's activated as soon as you press the Power button on your smartphone twice. It can send out an alert message to user's emergency contacts every two minutes. The message reads "I am in danger. I need help. Please follow my location." Along with this, the app sends the link of users' location every two minutes to provide the receiver with updated location details.

Raksha - women safety alert Raksha is designed to ensure that women always stay safe. The app is equipped with a button which, when tapped, immediately sends the user's location to specified contacts. It's possible to select the contacts that can see the user's location. Moreover, if the app is switched off and not working, even then it can send alerts. All the user has to do is press the volume key for three seconds. The app has SOS functionality and can send emergency SMS messages even when there's no internet connectivity.

    Himmat

Himmat is a free safety app recommend for women by the Delhi Police. In order to use the app, a user has to register on the Delhi Police website. Once registration is complete, an OTP is sent to the user, which has to be entered to complete the app's configuration. If a user initiates SOS alert from the app, her location information and audio/video is directly transmitted to the Delhi Police control room, allowing the police to reach the user easily.
    Stay Secure
Stay Secure is a free safety app for women, designed to help them in situations of distress. The app can be activated by pressing the Power button five times and automatically sends an alert to user's emergency contacts. It also has a free SOS SMS feature which can send a text to five of user's saved contacts within five minutes. Stay Secure also allows the user's saved contacts to keep a track of her location and can work without data connectivity.

    Women Safety
The next on our list is Women Safety. The app can inform the user's contacts of her location with just a tap of a button. Women Safety can send an SMS to a preconfigured number, along with the user's location and a link to Google Maps. It can use front and rear camera to take pictures, which are directly uploaded to the server. The app is comprised of three colour-coded buttons based on the seriousness of the situation, which can be used accordingly.

    Smart24x7
Smart24x7 is supported by the police of various states, and is designed to ensure the safety of women and senior citizens. The app sends panic alerts to emergency contacts in problematic situations. It also records voices and takes photos during panic situations, and can even transfer these details to the police. It also has call centre support, which can be used to track down the primary movements of the user. User just needs to press the panic button, select the type of service required and finally tap the submit button.

    Chilla
Extremely small in size, Chilla is a personal safety app that can be triggered with just a scream. If a woman is in distress, she should shout loudly to trigger an alarm in the app. The app can then send the user's location to her guardian even when the phone is locked. Chilla comes with an SOS feature too. If the distressed user presses the power button five times, the app can automatically alert pre-configured contacts. It can also send an SMS with the user's location and email, in addition to being able to place a call.

    Shake2Safety

Shake2Safety is probably the easiest to use app among this list. The user just needs to shake their smartphone or press the power button four times to send an SOS text or call to the pre-registered numbers. It works even when there's no internet connection. Moreover, users have the ability to activate or deactivate the option of shaking the device to send alerts. The app can be used in case of accident, harassment, robbery or other natural calamities.

    bSafe

The bSafe app ensures the safety and security of women. It allows contacts to follow a user through a live GPS trail and also set a timed alarm which goes off automatically, in case a user doesn't 'check in'. Moreover, it can make the user's phone ring with a fake call and also notifies emergency contacts of the user's location details. Along with this, there is a Guardian Alert button, which can be used to immediately inform the contacts of the user's GPS location during times of distress.

Here's how you can manage your smartphone notifications better

Are you annoyed with your smartphone's relentless stream of text messages, push alerts, social media messages and other noisy notifications?

Take heart, experts at Rutgers University in New Jersey, US, have developed a new model that allows the smartphones to learn automatically like a "human secretary" and predict the user's receptiveness to distractions by the notifications.

"Ideally, a smartphone notification management system should be like an excellent human secretary who knows when you want to be interrupted or left alone," said Janne Lindqvist, assistant professor at Rutgers University.

Currently, the notification management system is not smart or only depends on a user's setting, such as turning on or off certain notifications.

The model can help to better manage smartphone notifications using a sense of personality type and work patterns of individuals.

The study will be published in May at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Denver, Colorado.

In the study, the researchers collected more than 5,000 smartphone records from 22 participants over four weeks.

The participants took a test to see how their personalities aligned with traits such as extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness, to help predict how interruptible people were.

The results showed that when participants were in a pleasant mood, they were likely to be more interruptible than if they were in an unpleasant mood. It also varied based on their location.

But participants were reluctant to be interrupted when they were studying and were less interruptible when exercising.

"Preferably, your smartphone would recognise your patterns of use and behaviour and schedule notifications to minimise interruptions," Lindqvist added.

The findings could help phone makers and app developers build offerings that are more useful and less annoying, the researchers said.

"We know that people struggle with time management all the time, so a smartphone, instead of being a nuisance, could actually help with things," Lindqvist added.

World's 'fastest' free Wi-Fi service launched by Dubai Airports

has announced world's fastest free Wi-Fi service across its terminals to provide millions of passengers superfast internet access while they wait for their flight.

Aptly called WOW-Fi, the service offers a top speed of up to 100 megabits per second (mbps), about ten times faster than what many internet users would get at home in the UAE.

The service provides internet connection surpassing all other airports, according to a statement released here by Dubai Airports.

The launch of the service follows Dubai Airports' launch of an upgraded free unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi connection across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) in December last year.

The unlimited free Wi-Fi at DXB connects with just one click and offers speed that sets a new benchmark for airports globally.

To ensure the speed and reliability, Dubai Airports is investing in more than 6,000 new Wi-Fi access points to upgrade the entire wireless network infrastructure across both airports.

"As the biggest international airport in the world, we are at the heart of many journeys across the globe. To support these travellers, late last year we launched unlimited free high-speed Wi-Fi across our airports but our goal was to offer something they have never experienced at an airport before," said Michael Ibbitson, Executive Vice President of Technology and Infrastructure at Dubai Airports.

"During the two months since the soft launch of WOW-Fi, the service has been enjoyed by an average of over 100,000 unique users per day. We are certain the WOW-Fi experience will impress the 89 million passengers we expect to welcome at DXB in 2017," Ibbitson said.

PM Narendra Modi's presence on Facebook, Twitter does not cost nation a penny, reveals RTI

In what may come as a surprise to many, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's+ presence on multiple social media platforms has not cost the exchequer a single rupee since May 2014.

This startling information has come to the fore in a reply by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to an RTI application filed by AAP leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Sources said the reply from the PMO categorically states that no social media campaign has been run on Facebook+ , Twitter, YouTube or Google accounts maintained by the Prime Minister's Office.

PMO sources have revealed that the official mobile app of the Prime Minister's Office "PMO India" was designed by students in a contest conducted by MyGov and Google.+

The reply to Sisodia's RTI states, "There was no cost except the prize money in developing the App." Even this prize money has been paid by Google.

Prime Minister Modi, in his speeches and interactions both in India and abroad, has often referred to the "Narendra Modi App," as a simple way of connecting with him and learning about the work being done by him.

The response to Sisodia's RTI application shows that the ' Narendra Modi App+ ' is neither developed nor maintained by the PMO or the Government of India.

It does, however, add, that "citizens are using it to connect and interact with the Prime Minister," in addition to the websites Prime Minister of India and www.mygov.in . A look at the developer page of the Narendra Modi App shows that the BJP's IT Cell has developed the same and is maintaining it.

Recently, a senior All India Radio official had revealed that the Prime Minister was unhappy to see advertisements being released for the initial few episodes of his monthly radio address - 'Mann Ki Baat'.

The official went on to state that 'Mann Ki Baat' has now become a programme where All India Radio spends almost nothing and earns a lot. In 2015-16, the programme generated a gross advertising revenue of Rs. 4.78 crores, the official told a leading English daily.
