Now its My Turn!! Traditionally, In Our Custom,, the wedding would be conducted at the groom's residence. Today, the venue has shifted to wedding halls. Nevertheless, the marriage is celebrated with gaiety and fervor

The marriage begins with the bridegroom's party visiting the bride’s house in a ceremonial procession, carrying turmeric, coconuts, plantains, betel leaves, flowers, dry fruits and a saree(Saree Color/Design Ponnu Viruppam than ) for the bride including the thali and a thread dyed yellow with turmeric.

முகுர்த்தம் refers to the auspicious timing of the actual wedding ceremony itself. This is based on astrology. Usually, the auspicious time is set early in the morning. The wedding ceremony will be held under the marriage canopy which consists of a temporary thatched structure fashioned by coconut leaves knit together.

தாலிகெட்டு - The bride is bedecked in fine jewelry and an ornate sari and made to sit to the right of the groom. The groom wears a white silk Dhoti, Shirt, Angavasthram and Silk turban as his wedding outfit.

The couple invokes Agni, to witness their commitment to each other. The bride places both her hands into the groom’s and her brother then places rice into her hands. Together the bride and groom offer the rice as a sacrifice into the fire.

The thali is taken around in a plate and blessings of elders and relatives are sought. After this, the groom in ties the thali around the bride's neck assisted by his sister. Three knots are made and as this happens, conch shells are blown and nadaswaram is played in a high pitch. Once the thali is tied the bride sits at the groom's left. Both of them face east. Coconuts are broken and prayers are offered to the gods.

After that the groom applies a small dot of Kungumam, to the bride’s forehead and welcomes her as his partner for life.

Then the father of the bride places her hand in the groom’s hand requesting him to accept her as an equal partner.

Women present at the wedding raise a shrill chant called kulavai. This is a special custom followed by us. After this, flowers and colored rice are thrown on the heads of the couple.

Maalai Mattral - The couple exchanges garlands as a gesture of acceptance of one another and a pledge to respect one another as partners. This is followed by the groom taking the right hand of the bride and going around the sacred fire thrice.

Offerings Fruits & Milk - The bride’s Sister / the Groom’s Sister offers the Couple, fruit and milk as the expression of welcome and respect.

Then, the bride and groom walk seven steps together to signify the beginning of their journey through life together. Once this is completed, the couple prostrate before their parents and elders to seek blessings.

When Mom Said all these things, Ma Bro suddenly told “ Michchatha Un Marriage la parthu therinjukko,, Maa First enaku ithai sollunga - Love Marriage Panna ithellam seivingala?? Athukku enna Pannanum..” ha ha ha.. Appuram Enna Hey Dandanakka Danukkunakka..

    Hi Nivi
That's very nice of you both to think & care for your mother. Even me & my husband have one year difference only.
