Different Customs and Traditions in Weddings....

    Hi Friends,

Let us discuss here about the different customs and traditions, which are followed in our Weddings.

For sure, there will be many different traditions followed in each family during the Weddings.

So, through this thread, we all may come to know about the various traditions which are followed in our Weddings.

    For example,

    • During the Knot tying ceremony, the sarees worn by the bride will be of different color and texture. We can share about that.
    • You can share the traditions followed, because, they may not be similar in all the weddings.
    • Other religion girls can also share their traditions, followed in your Weddings, so that, all of us, may come to know about your religion.
    • Members whose marriage is a Love-marriage, can also share, the customs and traditions, which were performed in your marriage.
    • Unmarried members can also share these, which are usually followed in your custom.

Re: Different Customs and Traditions in Weddings....

    Let me start first.

    In our custom,

In earlier days, on the day before marriage, the Bridegroom will be going a very slow ride in the open car, this is called Jaanavaasam. Now a days, this is not followed.

On the Marriage day, in the early morning, the bride groom will be asked to eat many sweets, snacks and tiffin along with a bachelor boy, who will be a close relative of his.

Then the couple will be seated on a Oonjal, after the exchange of garlands.During this garland exchange, both the bride and bridegroom will be lifted by their Uncles (mama), on their shoulders.

Surrounding this Oonjal, all the relatives will perform many rituals, sing songs. The Bridegroom's sister, will carry many articles, like saree, salwars, cosmetics, dolls, handbags and many accessories like this, which she is going to gift for the bride. She will later display these, on the stage of wedding.

For each and every tradition, the girl will be changing the sarees.

During the தாலி முடிதல் , the girl will be wearing a red colored silk saree, which is usually given by the bridegroom's family.

The girl will be made to sit on the lap of her father, and the boy would stand in front of him. Now the father will give away the girl to the bridegroom . This is called KANYA DHAANAM.
