Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival

1527355267428.png

For a quarter-century, the Florida town of Fellsmere welcomes amphibian aficionados from all over the world so they can chow down on frog legs and alligator. Dishes include the “Frog Pop” — sort of like a corn dog, but with frog instead of a hot dog — the frog leg and gator combo dinner, and the “Frog Leg Pounder,” described as a “full pound of delicious frog legs,” with no side dishes to dilute that froggy flavour. Thanks to the festival’s success, Fellsmere currently holds the title of the Frog Leg Capital of the World.

Battle of the Oranges
Festival

1527355441916.png

This aptly name annual event in Ivrea, Italy reportedly dates back to the 13th century, and although its origins are hidden by the haze of time, the purpose is the same: thousands of people gather in the Northern Italian city, divide into nine teams, and hurl oranges at each other with furious force in what has become the world’s largest food fight. In the midst of all the madness is a carnival, where the festivities are brought to an end with a symbolic mock funeral. According to estimates, in 1994 more than a half-million pounds of oranges were brought in to be hurled.

Turnip Festival, Switzerland
1527482623916.png

It’s called Rabechilbi Richterswil, and it’s Europe’s largest turnip festival. Taking place in November, on the second Saturday after Halloween, it involves 26 tonnes of carved turnips being paraded around the village of Richterswil on Lake Zurich.

The turnips are hollowed out, elaborately decorated, and used as lanterns with candles inside. Festivities include a parade of illuminated floats through the village at night, and the entire place is decorated with carved turnip lanterns.
