Bora Bora was formed around four million years ago after volcanoes erupted from the sea bed. As the volcano sank back into the Pacific Ocean, a ring of coral reefs, or atolls, formed to mark the ancient coastline.

The Bora Bora lagoon also formed between the reef and the island around this time. The volcanic core that still remains on the main island of Bora Bora is actually sinking at a rate of one centimeter per century.

Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean.

The island, located about 230 kilometres northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.

Bora Bora is a major international tourist destination, famous for its aqua-centric luxury resorts.
