A winter diet brings to mind clear broths with bread, aromatic stews and hot spicy curries. Using spices judiciously and thoughtfully will not only add a bang of flavor to your dishes, but also give your health a boost.

Here are some easily available spices to stock in your kitchen this winter:

Cinnamon - This spice has a bittersweet taste and is a favorite to use in cakes and curries.

A dash of cinnamon powder can be added to your cup of coffee and in cupcakes and cakes.

It is thought to boost the immune system, so it is an important spice, especially for the elderly as they are prone to more illnesses. It is also said to control blood sugar in diabetics.

Ginger - Used predominantly in Asian and Indian food, ginger soothes stomach aches, helps in digestion, and cures those niggling coughs and colds.

As digestion becomes slower in winter, it is a good idea to fortify yourself with ginger in the form of ginger tea in the mornings and soups in the evenings.
