Coffee is preferred by both the young as well as the old people. Many people’s morning is not the morning without hot coffee cup. Coffee has high stimulating effect. However, as its good taste, it is good to the health or not? With its highly stimulating effects, there are a lot of different facts about health hazard of coffee. These facts may not known by many people. Caffeine is one of the constituent of coffee which has stimulating effect and many people are not aware of these stimulating effect. We heard lots of research about coffee every one or two week. Some says it is good some says bad.

Caffeine is the most psychoactive drug in the world. From the world’s population, about 80% consumes it on a daily basis. On health benefits and consequences of coffee, research is being done continuously. Chemically, caffeine is 1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine. Caffeine from coffee has a property to affect mood, the cerebral vascular system, stamina, and gastric and colonic activity.

Coffee Addiction:

Many people considered that coffee is addictive in nature but actually it is not addictive. This belief may have twigged from the many people that create a habit of drinking coffee day in and day out. Such a habit provides the idea that coffee drinking may be addictive. Some studies on coffee have suggest that caffeine in coffee has same addictive effects on the brain as those found in addictive drugs such as amphetamines or cocaine.

Coffee and Asthma:

It has been believed that coffee helps to manage respiratory conditions such as asthma. A recent study has shown that coffee has capacity to handle asthma. Participants with asthma who drank an average of three cups daily have had reduced the incidence of their asthma attacks by 28 percent.

Coffee and Headaches:

Coffee has also some pain killing effect. Coffee may help to banish headaches according to some people. Some studies recommend that this might be true. A study conducted on coffee have shown that 80 % of those who drank coffee along with taking painkillers showed a significant improvement within six hours in comparison to just 67 percent of the group who takes only painkillers for their headaches. Researchers consider that the caffeine may have an effect to treat headaches. It enhances the absorption of substances in pain medications and also the pain killing effects. It is also known that caffeine has property to constrict the blood vessels and so it may neutralize the effects of headaches that caused by blood vessel dilation.

Coffee and Sleeplessness:

Coffee may cause sleeplessness in some people according to many people. However, studies on coffee indicate that this popular beverage does not inhibit sleep in any way. Caffeine which is present in coffee has stimulatory effect and may increase alertness in people. But, it does not affect the dream phase of sleep in any way. Due to its stimulant property, coffee may make it hard for some people to sleep but it does not lose sleep of any people at night. One recent study which is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health suggested that caffeine taken in the morning formed consistent stress throughout the day that continued even during bedtime.
Other health effects of coffee:

Energy Booster:

According to many people, drinking of coffee is helpful for them to feel less drowsy and more alert. However, as the time increased more caffeine is required to produce the same result which causes the greater dependency on the drug.


Coffee has the property to relax the sphincter muscle of the esophagus in some people which is responsible for causing heartburn. The research on this topic is not clear that this effect is from the caffeine or from other elements in coffee.


Caffeine will awaken an intoxicated, but it has no effect on abstemiousness. But in real, coffee have hangover effect on body by its dehydrating action on body.

Problem Solving and Quick Response:

Caffeine speeds up reaction time according to some experts. But, some other experts say that it slows down the reaction time. Most scientists have the same opinion that caffeine worsens the performance of more complicated tasks, for example complex word problems, delicate muscular coordination, numerical reasoning, and accurate timing.

Anemia (iron deficiency):

Coffee beverages have been shown to cause considerable loss of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B and C, calcium, zinc and iron.

Coronary heart disease:

People who drank five or more cups of coffee a day had two to three times the risk of coronary heart disease according to new study which is carried out at John Hopkins Medical Institute.

Hypertension (high blood pressure):

Caffeine has increasing effect on blood pressure because it constricts the blood vessels and also fasts the pumping of heart. Coffee can not only worsen the symptoms of hypertension but also decrease the effect of medications.

Heart Disease, Heart Attack and Stroke:

Coffee has a blood thickening property. Also, it is responsible to cause irregular heart beats (cardiac arrhythmias). So, people who are at high risk for heart attack and stoke should avoid coffee.


Coffee stimulates the secretion of acid. So, people with ulcers should avoid drinking of coffee.


Caffeine leaches calcium from the bones. A study of over 80,000 patients illustrated that a relationship between brittle bones and heavy coffee consumption.

Adrenal function:

Adrenal levels are raised by caffeine. And on over time, it leads to a state of adrenal gland fatigue. This incapability to properly answer to stress can cause anxiety attacks in the body.


Coffee consumption has been also associated with an increase of miscarriages, stillbirths, breech births and low birth rate. Many experts recommend totally avoidance of coffee during pregnancy. Caffeine can remain in the blood of a fetus or newborn for as much as four days and causes irritability and sleep problems.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS):

Caffeine utilization has been related to a higher occurrence of many PMS symptoms, such as tension, anxiety, tiredness, sleep problems, irritability, and breast tenderness.


People having rosacea should evade coffee and other drinks and foods that responsible to cause flushing.

Infertility (Male and Female):

It has the property to slow down the mobility of sperm and also to increase the incidence of abnormal sperm. Research has also suggested that women who drink more than a cup of coffee a day decreased their fertility up to 50 %.

Weight Loss:

Caffeine acts an appetite suppressant. In 1991, the FDA has banned the use of caffeine in over-the-counter weight loss products due to its no long term effect on weight. It also causes many health related problems particularly heart problems.

Athletic Performance:

Some athletic “gurus” encourage caffeine for stamina. However, the research is arguable. In many competitive sports, caffeine is a banned substance due to misuse of it.
