Oatmeal
Many nutritionists recommend eating oatmeal as a way to increase the production of breast milk. Although there is no scientific evidence regarding it, but many women have found that consuming oatmeal for breakfast on a regular basis increased their milk supplies significantly. This may be because oatmeal is a good source of iron. Usually breastfeeding a baby puts a stress on the body and this in turn can result in iron loss. Furthermore, iron deficiency can greatly affect your milk supply. That’s why it is recommended to eat one bowl of oatmeal everyday, so as to improve your iron content.

Another reason for which oatmeal is considered to be an effective food for increasing milk supply is because it’s a comfort food. When a woman eats a bowl of oatmeal, it may help her to feel relaxed which in turn might cause her body to release oxytocin, which is a hormone involved in milk production. However, those women who suffer from gluten sensitivities should first consult with their healthcare provider before including oatmeal in their diet.

Legumes

Legumes are perhaps the most popular lactogenic food that is known to help increase the milk production in lactating mothers. It’s recommended that all those women with low milk supply issues must include legumes like green beans, chickpeas, lentils and lima beans in their diet. All these legumes have a higher caloric count, which in turn helps boost energy. Hummus, a simple yet delicious dish made from chick peas, lemon juice, garlic, tahini and olive oil, is considered to be an ideal snack for nursing moms since it combines chickpeas and garlic – another lactogenic food.

Dark leafy vegetables

Dark leafy vegetables are another food that is great for breast milk production. Dark leafy vegetables like spinach are high in iron, calcium, folate, vitamin A, K, D, and several essential minerals like magnesium and calcium. All these nutrients are particularly important for those women who are breastfeeding. They are also rich in phytoestrogens that help increase the breast tissue growth as well as lactation. Therefore, it is recommended by a number of lactation consultants that new moms must eat 1 or 2 salads each that include spinach, romaine lettuce, or kale, everyday. You can also add these nutritious leafy vegetables to fruit smoothies.

Red vegetables

Red vegetables like beets, sweet potatoes and carrots are full of beta-carotene and Vitamin A, which are needed in extra amounts by lactating mothers. Both beets and sweet potatoes are good source of iron. Carrot juice is especially known to boost milk supply. It is believed to improve the supply as well as the quality of breast milk. So, if you’re breast-feeding then be sure to include these superb naturally sweet vegetables in your diet. You can even have them in soups, salads, porridges, or desserts.

Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seed is a superb natural lactogenic food that can stimulate the ducts in the breast to increase the milk supply. Since ages, fenugreek has been used to produce more breast milk and now there is even a research to support this ancient belief. A research study has shown that fenugreek (or methi) can indeed help increase milk supply in new moms. Some doctors told that if you include these fenugreek seeds in your daily diet then you’ll have an increased supply of milk within seven days! However avoid excess intake of fenugreek, because it’s a mild diuretic. So, if you consume too much of fenugreek then you may end up losing a lot of water.

Garlic

Garlic is considered to be one of the best ways to stimulate breast milk production and to increase milk supply. According to various studies, the garlic you eat will travel into your breast milk and this would change the taste and smell of your milk. The unique odor of garlic is thought to make babies suck milk for longer duration and this would eventually result in increased breast milk production. So, try to include garlic in your daily diet but in moderation (1 or 2 cloves of garlic a day). Instead of having them raw, you can even use garlic cloves to flavor vegetables, pasta, meat and seafood. However, if your infant is suffering from colic, then you must avoid garlic from your diet at all costs.

Brown rice

Just like oatmeal, brown rice is also a superb choice for those new moms who are suffering from the problem of low milk supply. Brown rice is actually a complex carbohydrate, which not only gives you an energy boost but also raises the serotonin levels in your brain. And this compound called Serotonin stimulates the production of prolactin in the body, which is a key hormone involved in lactation. In short, regular intake of brown rice will indeed help you have enough milk production.
Papaya

The green, unripe papaya is known to boost milk supply in lactating mothers. There is no scientific proof to support this claim, but it is believed that green papaya can indeed improve lactation. This may be because papaya contains several useful phytochemicals and enzymes that can enhance breast tissue and increase lactation. Moreover, papaya is also known for its sedative quality, which may help mom to relax and thus boost her breast milk supply naturally.
