I.V.D.P. (Intervertebral Disc Prolapse, Lumbago-Sciatica)
interv.jpg
Spinal discherniation is a condition affecting the spine in which there is a Tear in the outer fibrous ring of an intervertebraldisc which allows the soft central portion to bulge.
Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary depending on the location of the herniation and the types of soft
ivdp3-001.jpg
tissue that become involved.
Signs and symptoms.

  • little or no pain if the disc is the only tissue injured,
  • pain that will radiate into the regions served by affected nerve roots that are irritated or impinged by the herniated material.
  • undefined pains in the thighs, knees or feet.
  • numbness, tingling, muscular weakness, paralysis, and affection of reflexes
  • If the herniated disc is in the lumbar region the patient may also experience, pain usually continuous or at least is continuous in a specific position of the body.CAUSES
    • Disc herniations can result from general wear and tear, such as when performing jobs that require constant sitting.
    • herniations can result from jobs that require lifting.
    • Traumatic injury to lumbar discs commonly occurs when lifting and benting at the waist,
    Lumbago-Sciatica
SCIATICA AND DISC PROLAPSE Sciatica is a pain in the leg caused by compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt in the lower back,
buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.
Causes of sciatica Sciatica is generally caused by the compression of a lumbar spine nerve root L4 or L5or sacral nerve roots S1, S2 or S3, or far less commonly, by compression of the sciatic nerve itself. Sciatica may also be experienced in late pregnancy, primarily resulting from the uterus pressing on the sciatic nerve, and, secondarily, from the muscular tension and/or vertebral compression consequent to carrying the extra weight of the fetus, and the postural changes inherent to pregnancy.
    Ayurveda Disc Prolapse and Sciatica
In ayurveda the conditions which can result in backpain include external traumatic factors (abhighataja), and internal (nija)
Lower back (kadi) is a vata specific site, at the same time joints are site of sleshaka sleshma(kapha), due to the causes(nidanas) vatha aggravation occur in kapha sthana.
And due to the increased ruksha guna(quality of dryness, leading to reduction in water content resulting in prolapse and inturn nerve irritation. The aim of the treatment is to reduce the dryness and bring back the sneha guna, elasticity and to rehydrate the disc, removing the osteophytes also called the mala roopakapha.the treatment will be mainly vataharam and kaphaharam in initial stages and brmhanam in later stages to nourish the disc. The Ayurvedic Slipped Disc treatment can be divided into following stages.
    Medicinal Management(Oushadam)
Meditation and Medication for two to three months while orally taking traditional Ayurvedic herbal medicines
This Herbal medicine strengthens the Nervous System and specifically the Para-Vertebral muscles of the BACK. By this, it reduces the compression on the Inter-Vertebral Disc and gives relief to all the related symptoms.

    Local Measures(Sthanika Chikitsa)
Setting the bone alignment. The herniated disc can be restored into its orginal position
    •relives myo-facial spasm
•corrects disc dehydration, healing procedure for the restored disc
•strengthens para spinal musclesboth the disc and also wholistically causing complete rejuventation for the whole spine
    •arrests disc dehydration
    •restore back mobility

Hi Smith,

Yoga is the best remedy for disc prolapse......

Please consult a genuine, yoga master, for the remedy, through which you can be precautious about the disc prolapse, which may not recur later......

Also, I have heard that, you need to lie in a HARD BED, without pillow, which is the main thing to be followed.

friend i am also having this problem, since 2005 . now i am managing it properly, i don,t have any problem.

- avoid taking wait in any form.

- don,t bend suddenly.

- always , at least for certain period , avoid to sit in the floor.

- while travelling in autos, or in two wheeler keep your body wait in your legs .

- don't stress your back to sit.

_ if doctor suggests to wear belt , maintain it .

_ suddenly if you feel pain just lie down for 1/2 an hour straightly ,
with out altering your posture.

---there is no specific medicines for that, some times dr. used to tell, to take calcium tablets.

-- the only way is ,you have to maintain by your physical activity.

---if it is serious , they will ask you to go for surgery, at the same time they will tell the pros and cons that is, the success rate,

actually you didn't mention which part of your vertebrae have prolapse,

---- don't worry it is not that much serious , you can maintain by physiotherapy treatment with proper doctors advice.

--avoid to stand for hours together .

Sorry to know that. Do take care of your diet and do some light yoga asanas but not the ones that put weight on your back. And it is always best to consult from the best when it comes to spine care. If you are close to Delhi the do pay a visit to the Nova Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at New Delhi.
